Candy caps and a chanterelle lookalike
    #24010849 - 01/14/17 09:08 PM (7 years, 16 days ago)

All found in Santa Cruz area. Went mush hunting today and found some candy caps. I was hoping to find some chanterelles too. I did find a yellow, gilled mushroom growing on a tree but it seems to have true gills and dark staining flesh.

I also found a few inedible Lactarius I think Lactarius xanthogalactus.

Any Idea what the yellow mushroom is?

Looks like a Jack-O-Lantern to me- they are poisonous, and may glow in the dark.

Awesome, that makes sense. I just got in my closet with the lights off and let my eyes adjust until I saw a low white glow. Very cool! Maybe better than chanterelles just to see that in person.

That's cool!  I found a bunch of jack-o-lanterns a few weekends ago and got super excited about my first potential chanterelle find.  Brought them home, checked for look-alikes, and my excitement dried up.  Couldn't even get them to glow...but at least I didn't poison myself!
