Yeah animals are more closely related to fungi than they are to members of the other kingdoms. The "more than anything else" part of your claim isn't quite true though.

random genetic mutations are proven to occur. Any organism with a beneficial mutation (most are detrimental) that helps them in their environment has a higher chance of living to sexual maturity and or attracting a mate so they pass on their genes and the organisms that they have an advantage over are less likely to pass on their genes.

Google peppered moths during the indistrial revolution in england.

Also how do you explain vestigial structures?
