Monks
    #24001856 - 01/11/17 05:46 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I just got a job at a monastery affiliated college campus. There are stringent monks there I see walking all the time. What can these people be thinking about all day? I do respect them because they are highly devoted to their beliefs, but we are human! Not to mention hot ass woman walking around on campus all the time. Like that monk isn't thinking about bending that hot ass bitch he seen an hour ago while eating 5:00 dinner when the bell rings! And I do wonder whether most of these guys are just obedient and submissive. Most of them do seem to walk with their head down.

WHy don't you stop and ask one of them? I am sure many of them would be happy to answer some questions about their lifestyle. Monk is one of the paths that can lead one toward spiritual freedom. That is far important than sex in the long run. Once you have suffered enough, you'll realize that.

I'm not saying you have to become a monk to find spiritual freedom, but it can certainly be helpful to some.

How is that spiritual freedom? You are a slave to god and self oppressed. If I asked what they think about most of the time, they would probably look at me and walk away nor do I feel comfortable doing that. I can guarantee they aren't thinking of god or nature all day. I'm guessing they just carry around the normalities of life while trying to devote their attention to god.

Attention is the most powerful tool at our disposal, so there is great practical use in training attention which is one of the things a monk does. What do you think they should be doing? Having sex and taking drugs?

ANd I don't care what you think they will say, I am telling you to go ask them about their lives  and you can be polite about it. Why don't you feel comfortable?

No, not really. Most religious are happy to speak about their vocation. It gives them an opportunity to share the Gospel.

There were several Buddhist monks attending the Religious Studies program I was taking as a major while in University.

Became pretty good friends with one of them, a Theravada monk from a monastery just outside of Montréal.
He had previously worked in Silicon Valley and had some experience with LSD before becoming a renunciate and taking up monastic life.

Pretty chill dude, used to sit and meditate with him on the ledge of one of the campus gardens while waiting for class to start.
He would take walks off-campus with me when I would go to smoke a joint between classes, but expressed no interest in partaking himself.

Apparently the abstinence factor was only difficult for the first few years.  Not sure if he found the women on campus attractive in the same sense as myself, but he would laugh if I ended up distracted and turning my head to check out one going past.

On days that class ended early, he would come with me and a couple of graduate students to Tim Hortons for tea and donuts.
If class ended at the regular time he would come along but not order anything, because it was part of his vows to not eat after noon.

Had kept up with him via e-mail for a bit.
Posting this makes me think about maybe trying to get in touch with him again, but not sure if it would hit the junk mail folder as I no longer have access to my university e-mail to send it from...

It can be really rewarding to get to know people who live different lifestyles.
Just talk to them, it could become really rewarding as a learning experience.  Treat them as human, since you already recognize them as such.

You are highly conditioned my friend, probably fearful of cuddling with your same sex even, you will put a label on it just as you did the Monks.

In reality the Monks would be ever so happy to talk to you, their main practice is compassion.

Lose the judgements and be free

Depends on the type of monk.  The SE Asian monks mostly arent full time monks, young guys are required to dress up in robes and do the monk thing every now and again, part time gig.

I think the only way to be successfully celibate is to have the object of sex completely removed from the mind via meditation and the like.

It seems all the perv stuff from the priesthood, if not something more sinister, is that they have not refined themselves internally yet to make such a commitment.
