Do you fear death or how you'll die?

I'm terrified of bears.

But with that said I don't think I'm scared to die or that it's something I should be wasting energy worrying over. For me the bigger issue is how I will die in the future, I'd like to do the cliche thing of dying of old age but I still worry about bears.
I think I'm looking for macabre positivity on this one.

The brain would shut down after they started tearing into you. The flood of all the painkillers and nervous system activity . . . you'd just pass out.
Then wake into God.
You can wake into God right now actually.
When you wake, you find no, not are you able to take on a "grisly" death. Or bear. But, you KNOW you encapsulate all phenomena and you have already witnessed all things.
Safe and sound,
Hallowed be Thy name!

death no constant worsening pain yes
also some other big human fears are insanity poverty exile or loneliness or rejection having your make up on wrong and not knowing it
of course what really messes us up are bad mental habits and attitudes (like for example focusing on fears!!!) and continually making small choices that are poor

I was about 15 seconds from a sure death a while back. Logging truck coming my way drifting further further further into my lane. Nowhere to run, nowhere to go. Guard rail with no lane to right. No way to ditch it.
Oddly, I think my pulse went up a bit but it was almost a relief to realize it would be over quickly, even though I had the clear realization that it was going to suck. Slowed way way down laid on the horn hard I would have tried to outrun him that might have worked too but maybe not. He woke out of his slumbers just in time to almost jackknife the rig loaded with logs very close very close.

OK, so now I'm gonna have to be "that guy"
Your all afraid of death otherwise you would not be alive. Think about it. Why not just walk into on coming traffic? Because you will die, or be injured which for most off human history was a death sentence, which is why we also avoid injury.
This thread is a massive denial of a perfectly normal aspect of human psychology.

We can strive to stay alive and avoid being killed without fearing death.
Fear of death is a lack of willingness and ability to accept reality.
This is a common form of suffering, and is totally optional.

Is a fear of death really perfectly normal? It's normal not to want to die but a genuine fear seems an overstatement in my view.
I would say not, I think it's more so a fear of the way in which we die or what might happen after we die with hell etc.
I want to die of natural causes, not of vehicular manslaughter if you get my jist.

Those in this thread who believe the fear of death is essentially an illusion should check out terror management theory. Its a body of social psychological work that gives evidence to the hypothesis that a fear of death is constantly idling in the background of everyday life. If your scientifically minded this should easily convince you.
Here is a short video by one of the founders of the theory:

Ideally I'd like to do a superduperjesus dose of psychedelics to end it all in old age.. go out with a bang I guess.
@blingbling There's no point in fearing the inevitable Best do our best to avoid hastening its arrival.
For me life is like a drain and we're just circling to the center enjoying the scenery as we go along.
We as humans have come to be able to control our fight or flight response and transcend the existence of a philosophical zombie.

I fear death from time to time, the feeling was more prevalent when I was a child. During later years, probably partly due to reading philosophy and tripping I've come to fear death less. I might be a bit weird or something but not once have I cried at a funeral, I've seen it as a sad but unstoppable thing that people go away.
At times when I've felt worse, I've had suicidal ideation, but mostly as a distraction of my daily life as to just think about what exactly would happen. Only twice have those thoughts become more serious about taking action, as in getting an urging feeling to just go ahead and get it over with, but some rationally thinking part of me has stopped me from executing my plans.
The only time I think I really was close to death was as a teen when having an energy drink on top of some speed that was more pure than I thought. This combination gave me pretty much all the effects of an OD, except for cardiac arrest and death. During that time I got kind of worried about what family members would think but I didn't go to a hospital or call an ambulance. For some reason I just thought, "this might be it... well, so be it then".
The thought of just ceasing to exist isn't that scary in and of itself, I've even considered it to be a beautiful thing to be able to merge back with nature while dissolving and fading away this thing called ones personality. Then again the egoistic part of of me wanting to have and give positive experiences to people mostly overrides the thought of stopping everything. That Nietzsche quote has some truth in it.
I don't know if I have a point to make with this, but those are some of my thoughts and feelings dealing death.

I am amazed at how many people choose suicide in the face of the inevitability of death, as if the act of self termination is proof of self determination.
but self determination only makes a difference during the planning stages of a project: once the thing is underway, things play out automatically for the most part, and not always as imagined.Quote:

I disagree, I don't fear death, but I don't want to die, just because a person doesn't fear death, doesn't mean they walk around thinking they have super powers. I can't stop death from finding me when it does, that's out of my hands, so why waste my energy on worrying about something I have no control over? This is why I don't subscribe to religion, because I see so many religious people worry about what waits for them when they die, it's like they focus so much on the next life(?), that they forget about how to treat themselves and others in this life, and many religious people think it's their duty to illuminate the mysteries of the "divine" to their fellow brethren, often through questionable means.
I understand not ever religious person acts that way though, but just seems like the majority do, what's the point of life if you're constantly in fear of god, fear of death, fear of anything really, I know we all have fears we face daily, some are larger than others, but letting any of these fears dominate us, turns us into the walking dead, and steals the gusto from life.
Why would anyone walk into oncoming traffic just because they didn't fear death? I don't understand that logic?

I had my 17 year old dog Karl put to sleep yesterday.

That's him as a pup. Due to age his central nervous system was shutting down. His hind legs, bladder, and anus would not function towards the end and it was moving up his spine. He might have lived another week, but his pain was intense. I was up every night for a week helping him turn over when he cried out in pain from being in one position too long. I was exhausted from this. The vet gave him a tranquilizer and then a shot to stop his heart. He died in less than 3 seconds and in the final moments after the tranquilizer and before the final shot he was able too relax and finally sleep. He passed while asleep and in no pain.
This is fine with me. I don't mind death...it waits for all living things...just leave out the pain. Death is not scary, but intense pain is. Hopefully I will have the wherewithal to end it myself if the occasion occurs.

A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

If death isn't so bad one may wonder why euthanasia clinics aren't a common option for the distressed. Indeed it must be because death is such a horrible state that any amount of pain is the preferable choice.

Because Republicans, Democrats and corporate government use pay to play tactics to do what they can to remove the rights of individuals whilst making a profit, especially in those conservative, religious states of America.

Apparently they recently stopped receiving imports of euthanasia drugs and began manufacturing their own that were not as effective or lethal, which is why there was a recent case of a death row inmate asking to be shot in the face by a firing squad rather than take ineffective/inefficient paralysis drugs.

More like the medicine will paralyse you but it won't knock you unconscious so you'll be awake to experience the effects of the next drug which is going to stop your heart over a 10-15 minute period.
Euthanasia is a 3 step process with a paralysis drug, another tranquilizer and then a final one that has the lethality.

I died twice last month from fentanyl. I woke up both times not knowing what happened. These weren't the only times. Death is nothing to fear because you wont even know it. It is like going to sleep and not being aware you never woke up. Your vision may awash with white light like water diffusing through a dry paper towel prior to going out. I never seen tunnels or anything.
Absolute nothingness!! It can be meditative and educational when you survive it.

Death, or the thought of death, is one of my best friends. Not so that I long for it, but the awareness of it makes me appreciate being alive and existing (also keeping the struggles and pains of existence in consideration), knowing it is all forever changing and more importantly; temporary.
Also, death isn't as bad as many people see it. Once it is there you will not be aware of anything.

And people that believe that the brain doesn't generate consciousness are generally using this philosophical precept to deny their animal reality, such a state of denial precludes fear, so yes you are correct. Congratulations
