What will you grow for ediables this year?
I have a very small 4' x 8' veggie garden. Trying to square foot garden. This year i want 4 tomato plants and 9 pepper plants. I added a 3 cubic foot bale of peat moss last fall. Also the usual 3 gallon bucket of goat manure, dash of P guano and kelp.
The grandparents have a mich larger space for veggies and i usually get some goodies.
I really wish i could produce a lot lf produce to bring to market. We have a livestock and produce auction in a county south lf us. Lot's of Amish that work the auction for their money.
Also i planted some autumn olive but that takes 6 years to produce fruit. Fruit jerky would be nice. There are 68 blueberry bushes out at the farm. I have fed 4 out of the 8 rows so far last fall. Gotta feed the other rows soon. Trying to put more goat manure around them. Would love to feed them a lot more and really work the soil, but $ rules.

All heirloom stuff at this point. Beets, cucumbers, collards, kale, chard, spinach, parsley, garlic, lettuce, peppers, tomatoes, arugula, basil, cilantro, dill, endive, bush beans, some other small stuff Im forgetting. Its been nice keeping seed year to year, the collection grows and seed makes nice gifts.

After I put up some deer fencing, plan on planting some chili peppers mixed, black cherry tomatoes, Kelloggs tomatoes, and some basil and herbs. Left a few herbs there last year the deer didn't eat. They are super desperate where I live will eat just about anything. They even started eating my eggplant this past year, you know they had to be desperate. I have a bunch of poppies there too so that could get interesting spreading some of those seeds and putting some ferts on them. This place has some nice raised bed gardens which helps.
Hey you may want to check out growing in wood chips like from the tree trimming guys. I bet you could get as much as you want for free if they had somewhere to dump a load. You'd want hardwood chips like oak I think. Anyway apparently it's a good way to go I haven't done it but have a bunch of chips at my place. Spread them around for mulch they hold the water is the thing. If you dig a hole and put them at the bottom and some compost on top apparently you need about 10% of the water you would otherwise. Great in the summer, keep the roots wet.

My 4 x 8 only gets 6 hours during peak day length. Still get a fair amount of tomatoes and one or two peppers a plant. It's a nice yard with lot's of tree's, not so good for gardens.
Grandma's garden gets all day sun. Her pepper plants yield dozens and dozens of peppers. Depending on the variety of course.
Anyone do any drying or canning? Perhaps freezing?

This year may be a small garden for me, as I've recently learned that I'm going to have to move right in the middle of planting season. But, at the very least, I will have garlic, ginger and tumeric (I grow them as perennials), a handful of herbs, and a couple pepper plants. I'd planned on corn and okra as well, but those may have to be put off until next year.

I so wish I could grow a larger garden. I would totally do some canning and drying. Would even freeze dry if the budget allowed that.
I get by ok. Good thing dry beans are cheap. Tomatoes are expensive and so are peppers. It makes good sense to grow those and mine taste very good.

I started planting garlic in the better soil along my dog-walking route. I can't seem to keep enough on hand in my garden so farming it along the roadside seems like a good idea.
You know the tinyest cloves in the middle of the commercial bulbs that seem worthless.

bulbs like garlic/onion/leeks are really interesting. they have a determinate time-frame coinciding with summer solstice (not so much leeks, as one doesn't plant them for curing/storing). the bigger/better quality bulbs for the same spacing depends entirely on the quality of light. ideally, garlic should have full sun, ALL day; smack-dab middle of the garden, when possible. i've grown leeks in partial-shade and they did okay, nothing astounding size or taste-wise, but not bad either.
don't forget, these edible bulbs require LARGE amounts of N throughout development. top-dress at least once, up to an inch thick if residues, possibly twice. mulch is also your friend to conserve water in the top top-soil

onions often require tons of water because of the shallow roots. is this your first time with this group of bulbs? if so, one of the biggest factors in their outcome is planting depth. plant just too deep and they will do nothing, even if the greens grow.
kinda like brassicas and strawberries with their collars
