I understand there are more than one of those hiding under that name, maybe this is a growth characteristic of one of them? Or maybe it was just an ideal micro climate?

Even considering their rot, they definitely don't seem to resemble L. deliciosus, apart fron the bruising which also looks more bluish green.

Also, considering L. deliciosus is mycorrhizal wouldn't it be odd for it to be growing on decaying oak? :confused2:

Not surprising, the European species are not the same. Ours are waiting for someone to bother sorting them out so we can stop using misapplied European names... Here in California most people walk past them while I have heard in somewhere like Poland they are much more prized. They are also not growing on decaying wood, but rather growing through the decayed wood. Mycorrhizal mushrooms can do that if the wood is decayed enough as roots and mycelium can penetrate it then.

Yeah, around here they are also quite good, they have a nice texture if previously blanched and a peppery taste.

The ones I find around here have a marked circular pattern on the cap and a sort of reticulate pattern of spots on the stem, that's why these looked so off.

These are not the same mushroom the stem on lactarius is brittle and brakes uneven and is short and the stem on the original post is long and stringy and rubbery and has far spaced gills that go down the stock a little more.

Yea, I was thinking Omphalotus olivascens. The gills are decurrent and they look to be coming from the wood. I don't know what to think about the blue/green colors though, maybe just a result of rain and freezing temps.
