Fluffy white mold contamination or tomentose mycelium?
    #24000393 - 01/11/17 07:19 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hi everyone, I'm the new kid on the block.

I just made my first mono tube With a bulk substrate 40% straw, 40% cow dung, 10% hay and 10% alfalfa + 6g CaCO3. I spawned it with 2 big jars of rye seeds (Psilocybe Cubensis 'Ecuador'). The first 5 days I saw only beautiful rhizomorphic mycelium.

2 days later (day 7) I saw fluffy white and greyish mycelium/mold on the surface of the substrates. First I thought is was the beginning of cobweb, so I sprayed white 3% H2O2. I know its was unlikely this was cobweb but I tried ... After a day the mycelium/mold restored itself and kept on growing. So it's definitely not cobweb mold.

I also saw some strange white wormy things growing on the side of the tub.

And now I see what this white worms are, they just mushrooms growing in large quantities?!?! The substrate is not even fully colonized, and they or standing in the dark, besides that 1 minute a day I check on them to monitor the growth of this mold. I know I can't save this tub and I need to throw it away. I just wanna have a second opinion and maybe someone can explain why the shrooms are already popping up in so large numbers. Maybe the fungus is triggering a survival mechanism and they try to give offspring as fast as possible??

Here or some new pictures of today. the greenish mold looks to be gone, now it's mostly dense white mold and baby shrooms on the surface.

Take a pic with the lid off please. I'm ATM not convinced those mushrooms are cubensis.

You are probably right!?!?

These mushrooms grow so fast ... 8 - 10 hours later you can see it good, the cap is longer and the color is too white for cubensis.

First I thought that the tiny white mushrooms where deformed through the other fungal contamination. But now they don't look anything like a cubensis. Even the way they grow, these long white worms ... on the side of the tub.

They are starting to look like  shaggy ink cap (Coprinus comatus)???
If this is another species than cubensis, than what the ***** went wrong?

I started with 2 jars of rye that i sterilized in a PC for 60 min, and inoculated with my LC that I made myself from tissue from my first Ps. Cu. 'Ecuador' flush. Than after a few weeks I made the bulk substrate. I pasteurized it for 2 hours in a bag in the oven at 75°C (167F).

Yep, it's a Coprinus! This morning they already turned black.
So I suppose its best to keep removing them before they turn black?

So the white fluffy mycelium is from the Coprinus, not from a mold contamination? Is this Coprinus contamination a problem in Te future for this Cubensis tub? Wil they just stop growing when the free NH3 is depleted?

Anybody any experience with this type of contamination, do I need to take action's?

Yes I've had inky caps.. that sub mix looks way too wet. Also they happen if the pasteurization cycle didn't reach proper temps. Also, coprinoid myc is much more aggressive, if the cubensis mycelium was hindered by something like bacteria in the spawn, it will get contaminated.

Yeah it is highly unlikely it'll be an issue if you do things properly. I'd at least start off again with agar cleaned up inoculant. Once bacterial free, and you got clean spawn, work on prepping better. On the dry side is better than too wet. Also make sure the internal temperature hits 140° for 1 hour.
