Keeping rodents/birds out of your outdoor grow

Any tips on keeping rodents and birds out of your outdoor grow? My outdoor tubs (50% woodchip, 50% rye spawn) are getting raided. After hearing liloldme's outdoor performed best in areas with rye spawn, I'd like to lay down a layer of rye spawn along with colonized woodchips.
I'm thinking of placing rye spawn then a layer of biodegradable material, then woodchips.
Something like this: http://www.gemplers.com/product/201401-24X50/biodegradable-paper-weed-barrier?gclid=CO61nKu0vdECFQ9EfgodZZYFzA&CID=25SEPLA&s_kwcid=AL!3210!3!171103502132!!!g!146111812345!&ef_id=WCPP@wAAAN6kRaOy:20170112200747:s#TAB-REVIEWS
Or maybe chicken wire?

buy some chicken wire, tieing wire (or zipties) and some posts and make a 3D enclosure.
Or build a green house

Put feeders out around the patch so they fill up before they get to the myc, or just make more spawn to make up for it.. their beaks and paws and such will move mycelium around which isn't a terrible thing. Some myc (like azures) likes the surface played with and stomped. Best finds are on game trails and where people walk.. they seem to like being disturbed.
