Trying to start a cyan colony
    #24002742 - 01/11/17 11:34 PM (7 years, 19 days ago)

I posted this in the cultivation forums, but thought that you all might have some insight:

I pulled a few pieces of colonized wood chips from a patch that I know of and put it into a cleaned Tupperware with freshly boiled (then cooled) hickory wood chips.  At this point I definitely see some mold, but also seem to see healthy mycelia.  Wondering what I should do.  I would like to salvage my efforts if possible.

Throw it in the wild.
More fresh air exchange maybe.

:frown:

Any recommendations for how to do a stem-butt jar in the future? I've familiarized myself with most of the guides here, but it seems most cultivators are doing cubes from spore syringes...

Does not look good. Get the mold out. And the white mycelium also looks like mold to me. I recall cyan mycelium way more ropey. I would suggest that you start over. Maybe clean up on agar. But you can spread the mycelium from the stems of the mushrooms to other wood beds. This will produce another patch, if the location is suited.

Dump this. Start over with stem butts on damp cardboard, like hombre said cyan mycelium is more ropey as it spreads - it looks kind of like a web. Once it's spreading, sandwich the cardboard with more cardboard and it will transfer and continue to spread. After you've got enough cardboard colonized (however much that is), introduce that to soaked woodchips and let it go. Paul Stamets Mycelium Running is a good read, he also uses wooden dowels with great results, but he's Paul Stamets and makes it look super easy. There's also the Outdoor Cultivation Forum.

I haven't worked out the best temperatures, I have some going inside that haven't molded, but that is a concern. Warmer temps encourage growth, but raise the risk of contamination.

You might also try older woodchips - I haven't tested it but have heard that they like wood that's broken down a bit. I'd like to know what others think about that.

I'll try to post you some pictures of the mycelium on my little cardboard grow this evening, unfortunately I have a job thing to go tend to now... And don't be disheartened, I made several messes out of great potential last year and as a result none of my cultivated mycelium fruited this year, but that mycelium is still growing. And this year I'm already getting better results from my new efforts.

I disagree.  I've had plenty of containers with surface mold like this colonize and win.  Cyans ain't like manicured cubes, they're wild and strong.

etrib, if your cyan mycelium is trying to colonize those chips then I wouldn't give up yet.  Pull out the worst of the moldy pieces and make sure the container has lots of air circulation (holes) in it.

A lot of getting cyans to take is being patient with it.  I keep my containers in a colder area of the house to try and slow contaminate growth.  It also slows the mycelium, but not as much.

I bypass cardboard as I've had more success transferring directly to chips like you've chosen to.  In the future it might help to just barely cover the colonized chips/butts with some wet wood chips.  Once they colonize that small amount add some more, repeat.  This way the contams don't have a lot of time to establish dominance on the chips.  I'd also use alder instead of hickory.

See hoe the chips with pieces of bark and odds on them contaminate the fastest?  I always pick those out at the start and just go with pure inner wood chips... if you're using the bags of chips for smoking that is.

Anyway, all is not lost yet.

I wound up throwing this out in the chips next door to me.  Not my original plan, but hopefully they take and I wind up with a patch right outside.

:whathesaid:  If I do use cardboard, egg carton like stevo said.  You can get absolute piles out of restaurant recycling, but be sure to ask first

After picking a known patch towards the end of the year.  I cut all the stem butts and put on wet cardboard that I had pulled the smooth flat outer layer off on... Get to the corrugated part.  Then sandwiched with more prepared cardboard.  Placed under rhododendron on north side of home.  Noticed great mycelial within weeks.  Then I boiled some alder chips for a few minutes, cooled, and added to cardboard.  Mulched heavily with leaves, sticks, and grass clippings.  Haven't checked on it since it's got cold but I am super excited to check it in spring and add more chips

Allenii mycelium on cardboard, about 1 1/2 weeks of growth:

The piece on the left is also colonized on the underside.

This is what I'm trying now.  I have a few pieces of colonized wood chips on wet egg-cartons, sitting open on a plate.  Im leaving it exposed because my last attempts have molded (main theory I've heard is lack of FAE).

I have the last of my tupperwares (similar to the one in the picture in my original post, but not as molded), sitting open outside. I plan to water these as they dry out / empty out excess water if it rains.

Be careful not to over water it - that's one of the mistakes I made last year. This time I soaked the cardboard until I could peel it apart, then squeezed it out really well before I added the butts, and since then I've only barely sprayed it once or twice. The mycelium in the picture has been inside in a covered but not airtight plastic container. They seem to like damp toilet paper roll tubes, too.

Woodlovers definitely LOVE partly rotten wood - they are lazy colonizing fresh chips, but rotten wood? They eat it up like a monster, producing massive rhizos as well. Highly recommended to spread it around in local forests.
