Micafil/Vermiculite, Heating, and a Glass Terrarium
    #24001889 - 01/11/17 05:59 PM (7 years, 19 days ago)

I do not want to flood the fourum with many posts, but I have many questions as first cultivation is to happen on Monday, when the spores arrive.

I bought a 110L bag of vermiculite today, without thought towards grade. There was only one type, didn't think that different grades existed, and the next hardware store is over an hour away so I settled with what they had since the bag mentioned it can be used for growing. Now that I read the receipt, it says "micafil/vermiculate" is this the wrong type? The company that's a good country me away is to deliver Thursday. If it is the wrong type of verm, I will cancel the order in the morning. If it is the wrong one, I'm in luck because I found a site that'll ship medium grade Vitax, a vermiculite, and perlite for a great price...But would 10L of verm and 20L perlite be enough? If I have left over, how do I prevent contamination?

Second question...I'm to do pf tek with, shotgun hole style, but I wonder could I use a terrarium? It would look beautiful on display and the goal is to grow year round as I learn and evetually take on more difficult cultivation.

Lastly, would a cheap heat pad suffice?

In advance: thank you to those who, instead of taking the piss out of my lack of knowledge, decided to guide me a bit. This is a hobby I very much want to begin. It is great substitute for community gardening, something I have been missing more so recently.

You're going to drill a few dozen holes in a glass terrarium?? Seems like a very bad idea unless you are somehow skilled at making many small holes in glass. Also you need a large container for a shotgun and that particular terrarium looks small, although there's nothing to reference its size by. Just get a plastic one like 1,000 other successful growers have done.

Heating pads are generally bad. How are you going to use a heating pad with a shotgun when the shotgun needs airflow on all 6 sides? Who told you to use a heating pad and for what purpose?

There's no need to worry about contamination with vermiculite or perlite that are still in their bags.

It sounds like you are working with some questionable info and ideas IMO.

"I'm to do pf tek with, shotgun hole style, but I wonder could I use a terrarium" as in, in the future, will a terrarium be okay to do, not with shotgun style, of course. Can mushrooms cultivate in a terrarium well, without much of an issue is more so the question? Why would I fancy more than a big storage bin? I want to build skill in cultivating mushrooms, try growing different kinds, eventually take on ones that are difficult to grow so I can admire the beauty and develop a new hobby. A big bin in my apartment would not look as nice as a terrarium, but whether or not a terrarium could work as I read little on it is the question. Can't seem to find much information.

I heard heat pads are a bad idea as well, but I live where the indoor temperature is less than 24°C. How else am I to get the temperature to rise without breaking the bank?

The bag says "micafil/vermiculate". Says it can be used with cement, for horticulture, and more. The grade not mentioned. Perhaps mentioning its described use can give insight to its grade. It is big enough, not a fine grade. Micafil/vermiculate...Is that different from the verm commonly used? I would attach a picture, but as I said, it has not been delivered yet. Woukd prefer to know if fat pieces of verm is better before delivery. I read mixed opinions.

I read forums and watched videos, but so many questions remain. What do I use to sanitize the jars before I even start as  as the bin? Am I only to use a mason jar,you know, those two part lids? Those types are seeming difficult to locate out here, with people on different message boards(wedding, craft, etc) asking why those type of jars are difficult to find.

I am starting to understand that this will pretty much be a wing it, trial and error first time go but any insight for a newbie would be appreciated. In other threads, I get little response that answers a question though I am genuinely interested in the art of growing and mycology. Sharing knowledge is a beautiful gift that is priceless. Someone you consider dense may not be so bad given there's an attempt to be informed.

The spores, including shipping was €42, the verm €24, and I still haven't the bin, jars, perlite, micropore tape, or gloves. Can only hope this turns out to be a well investment. Surely, even without much message board help, I can succeed given people have years before the internet. :mushroom2:

One member here made a SGFC using a glass aquarium.

If u want to do that research glass drilling methods. It can be done but its somewhat troublesome.

U could do a PMP or humidifier type set up but the results could be not so good.

As for that micafil verm Ive never heard of it so im not sure if its good or not

You can grow in a terrarium, but it's going to be more difficult to get good results. People used to grow in glass terrariums all the time, but it's harder to get a constant flow of fresh air. If you are gung-ho about that grow, I'd recommend waiting to try it until you know what you're doing.

Any type of pure vermiculite can be used. If it's large chunks, you can always break it down to a finer grade manually or using a coffee grinder.

Every BRF/PF tek will show you how to sterilize the jars. You don't need to sanitize them before filling. Fill with the BRF/verm mixture and then sterilize using a pressure cooker or steam sterilization.

You don't have to use mason jars specifically, and you don't need to use two part lids. That's just an easy to find jar and lid here in the USA. Mason jars are great because they are specifically designed for pressure cooking, and they endure many cooking cycles before they break. Any jar of the approximate proper size and dimensions will work as long as it can endure the sterilization process. Key to your BRF/PF tek jars is that they must not have shoulder - meaning, you need to be able to slide your cakes out in one solid mass without breaking them. This is the standard half pint BRF tek jar and notice how it has no shoulder whatsoever. One part lids of almost any variety (metal, plastic) are fine, as long as they fit snugly. If all you can find are jelly or condiment jars and lids, they will probably work fine as long as they meet the above criteria.

You don't need a heating pad if your room temperature is 24C. You want to grow between 65F and 75F, which is about 18C - 24C.

Buy a plastic tote.  This isn't an art display.

if you want to use an aquarium go ahead, just don't try to hook up fucking pumps and humidifiers to it

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22337800

at least take a look at that and see how to keep it simple.

here's how to make sure you don't get contamination

Thank you for all the information! Will try heating and as it is in the fifties °F in here. For glass terrarium, I'll try that in the spring when I've more experience.  There's good guides out there, surely. If not, shroomery message board may help.

I was about to order twelve 8oz wide mouth jars from the U.S for €40 just to so I could have the same type of jar I read are ideal to use. Wide mouth jars of that size I have yet to find out here. I read from a lad in Ireland that he used 8oz whiskey glasses without an issue. My concern: making a cap of just foil sounds like a good way to contaminate.

I'd give you guys with helpful answers a good rating, but not at fifty posts yet.

One more question for tomorrow's first try: How far apart do you place the cakes from each other?

I run my cakes about 4" apart(10cm) with no issues; just have them sit on small square of foil of or a lid.

as for the whiskey glass as long as the dry layer of verm. is not disturbed, contaminates shouldn't be a big issue.
