I was having serious issues for a very long time ( pf Tek) which of course is known for not needing a PC. I never had one, and was having serious bacterial issues...soon as I started with the PC...everything has been good, I thought it was everything else but my steaming method considering I steamed for nearly 2 hours. just wanted to state that for the newbs who may be having issues. GET A PC. I finally did. lol

Was your original steaming done with a tightly fitting lid? (as per original PF instructions)
Were the other instructions followed exactly, i.e. you used fine brown rice flour?
Were there any other changes? new spore source etc.
I just don't want people put off when many have had success following numerous versions of PF tek which needed no PC. Which is advisable to have but not essential IME

If you need a PC and don't have a lot of cash to throw into the hobbie you can go to your local thrift store and pick one up, I got my PC for 35$ and it was never used.

I'm going to start my first agar projects soon but I need to build a flow hood before doing anything else because I got contamination in more then 14 of my jars in the past two weeks.

I was using a different pot when I started and never had issues. I believe it was in fact a lid issue from my current pot. A pressure cooker is not needed , I was just clearifing how my PC made it much easier and no contams.a lot of new ppl may think 2hr steam is all dandy...but the lid may not be on tight enough...which was my issue

If you get contamination you're not ready for a flow hood. It's not a magical solution to not having any sterile skills...

PCs are awesome but ive had no trouble using a pot steamer for my PF jars.
Before the PC, how did u steam your jars specifically?

Man its kinda ghetto but I've had better luck with contams since I started putting a layer or 2 of foil in between the lid and the pot. Just make sure you poke a hole in the foil with a toothpick.

how the tek says. my old pot worked fine, never had a contam and my new pot was the issue. the lid would pop up sometimes from the steam. new pot could hold much more, reason why I started using it.

for your first grain i highly recommend doing 24hr soak on wbs.
you rinse as much as you can. soak 24hr. drain a few mins. load slightly damp. pc.
water content can be tricky to get right. doing a 24hr soak on wbs is almost fool proof

I tried wbs when I first started and I didn't care for it much. Considering the price and ease of use though I might need to try it again. I use rye now but it's expensive and has a high endospore load apparently, bacteria is sometimes a bitch to outrun. Bacteria doesn't cause me too many problems but makes the spawn smell off sometimes. Fuck, maybe it's just the shrooms. I really can't stand the smell of them, especially when they're drying lol

IME/O whenever you add heat to wbs it can get out of hand quick. I only watch water like a hawk if im cooking.
when it gets too hot/close to a boil it gets insanely sticky and will make for epic fails. my first wbs was docs. later i tried foomans and finally no soak. i wish i always did no soak. up to you though
