Mycelium piss or something else?
    #23995324 - 01/09/17 03:51 PM (6 months, 6 days ago)

Hey everybody, fairly new here. I visit these forums so much I figured it was high time I made an account.

Anyway, I visited the contamination FAQ but sadly couldn't determine what I was dealing with here. Is the mycelium piss? And if so, what are the standard precautions when dealing with such a thing? Can I birth as normal and fruit with my other healthy cakes? Feedback appreciated!

P.S. Notice the yellowing, afflicted area?

:cannotunsee:

Yes, those are metabolites made in reaction to stress.

At a minimum, that jar is bacterial af. I'd toss it.

Once you start agar you soon end up with more colonized plates than you can use. So you start knocking them into masters. Real quick you end up with a load of masters. So you expand em. All of a sudden you have 100 quarts of spawn you need to use, but the whole time you kept up with the agar and the masters. So now those are going in the fridge, you run out of jars and you are all out of room for monos. Your fridge is full of fruits cause your 3 dehydrators can only dry a half pound at a time and you have an industrial black garbage bag full under your bed.

Happens to everyone when they start agar. . .

Damn. I was hoping it was maybe somehow salvageable, but oh well. Thanks for the insightful response!

You can still use it bro... Bacteria isn't the end of the road... But you really gotta keep an eye on it because the bacteria weakens the myc making it more susceptible to contamination molds.

To each their own, but I disagree. Bacteria freaks me out, and I don't think I'd have a good trip from bacterial cakes, even if I did fruit them in a SGFC...besides this we don't learn much from setting the bar so low....being a perfectionist about your spawn is tough, but it leads to good technique quickly.

Spraying the cake with a diluted solution of water and h2o2 wouldn't solve the problem? I didn't consider this before considering it is metabolites/bacteria versus actual contamination, but now I am curious. At the moment, however, I do not think I could comfortably birth it a long side it's healthy siblings.

theres no threat of the bacteria spreading to other cakes, since the other cakes are colonized and well defended. The problem is that bacteria usually paves the way for trich and other molds. If you see bacteria other stuff is never far behind.

I see. Thanks for the insight. This is my first grow and everything is going very well so far and I do not want to jeopardize it in the final stages. Out of 16 substrates, only 2 have fallen including the aforementioned cake (3 currently in the FC.) While I have some advice being offered, allow me to go off topic just a bit; my SGFC has inside a digital humidity/temp monitor. The humidity is capping at 93% and the temp ranging from 72-74 degrees. Given my BRF cakes are cased, is this adequate enough to encourage pinning and also maintain during fruiting?
Also, I should note that it's been a very cold, dry winter so far and I am utilizing a cool mist humidifier within the room for overall humidity and a small ceramic heater for temperature.

Thanks again for the help, it really means a lot. This experience has been magical and I personally feel the users of shroomery.org are apart of it!

EDIT* for pic of said SGFC

Looks good but the UH and heater prob arent neccessary. A SGFC does fine on its own.

I just can't seem to get the right conditions i.e. humidity/temp without it though. I'm worried the airflow will be a problem too. I've read a lot that there should be no fan (or anything like it I imagine) with a SGFC. Putting tape over some of the insane number of holes I had drilled definitely helped though.

There is no such thing as being a perfectionist in pf tek... Syringes are bacterial to some degree period... Its the nature of spore printing man... I would let it ride.

What makes you think the conditions arent right? If its your hygrometer reading you can go ahead and throw it in the trash... Its useless... The RH in the empty space inside your sgfc shouldn't and never will be 100%... You only need that high of humidity in the milimeters of space directly around your cakes... The design works, its been the go to design for so long for a reason... Don't go covering holes and fucking up the natural air flow that allows the design to work so well.

This is why people use agar though man. LOL. IMO its a much better place to start than the PF Tek.  Not trying to pick fights, I just dont think its OK to tell all the new guys that bacteria is OK....you know what happens to opinions on here....pretty soon everyone will be thinking bacteria is nbd and who wants that lol.

I didn't drill it quite to spec. I'm not familiar with the exact specifications, but I know it requires a 1/4" hole every 2" with 6 rows, I think? Either way, I drilled hundreds of holes. I think too many. Please, by all means, reference my picture posted above. If the distance of the terrarium is too great to form a suggestion then let me know and I will post a better picture.
