Medium sized grow-op
    #23998053 - 01/10/17 12:13 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

About a year ago I began building what is now my grow house. It is composed by a roofed compost patio, a pasteurization oven, an area connected to the oven, where I mix the seeds with the compost, and a growing area attached to the previous seed mixing room. The oven, the mixing room and the growing room are all attached to prevent contamination after pasteurization.

So, on the 31 of December 2016, I mixed the mushroom spores (Paris mushrooms) with my compost. I filled bags with around 16 kgs of compost and seeds and then proceeded to place the bags in my grow room.

The grow room has 2 18,000 BTU A/C's, 1 ventilator 30cm diameter, 2 extractors 35cm diameter, a nebulization system with 4, 4-headed sprinklers, and wooden shelves. The average temperature of the grow room is 26 degrees celsius and the humidity sits at 85%. The ventilator and extractors are turned on simultaneously for about 2- 3 hours a day. When the planting occurred hygiene was a top priority! Everyone wore new lab suits (not sterilized :/) , rubber boots (not sterilized) , gloves, and face masks (both bought at a pharmacy).

Since the grow has started, this is what has happened:

Day 1: Noticed some white fuzz on some excess compost that was left in the oven. When I went inside the grow room I noticed it on the bags as well.

*When I saw this, I got online and read that the way to stop a contamination was to increase the temperature and decrease the humidity. And that is what I did. I also noticed that my compost had not lost enough moisture in the pasteurization process, and that there was an excess of water in it. Some of the bags had too much water from the sprinklers, so I poked holes in the bottom of the bags and stopped the nebulization entirely (watered the floor just if necessary to adjust humidity).

Day 6: I saw that my mycelium seeds had begun to grow white hairs around them . The white fuzz had become sort of greenish. But showed to have stopped growing.

Day 11: Temperature and humidity are stable. T: 26.4 H: 86%. Some of the bags show good sign of mycelium growth!. The greenish spots seemed to have turned dark green, but also seem to be drying out or dying. Other bags have some spots of yellowish fuzz growing on the compost. I can't tell what they are.

Bag with just mycelium growth.

The greenish spots. (seem to have died?)

The yellowish spots showing development. :S

That's all for right now. I'll keep this entry updated as much as I can. Any input is appreciated!!

Overly precautionary where it didn't matter
No precautions where it did matter.

You need healthy spawn and properly prepared substrate.

holy shit where do I start?  Your temps are OK, should be colder.  But your substrate is garbage.  whatever it is, you just want to mix straw, poo, and maybe a bit of calcium and a tiny bit of pure Nitrogen.

First off, thanks for your input.

Second: Where was I too pre cautious? Where should I be more pre cautious next time?

And lastly, I know my substrate was not too good, but my spawn also looks unhealthy?

Thanks in advance!

No need for lab coats.
But you need a clean culture to start.

Thanks for your input!

Can you tell me the ratio of each of ingredients for a better compost please?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry if I sound to noobish (cause I am haha), but by a clean culture, you mean that my actual seeds don't look healthy?

Did you use actual SPORES or mushroom spawn? You say both "seeds" and "spores". I see grains(seeds) in the second picture, are they colonized.

So you'd need to use actual living mycelium in the form of spawn, meaning grains/seeds that are covered in healthy mycelium. Is that what you started with, is that what you mean when you say seeds?

Keep working at it, I'm in noob-land with you

:mushroom: My trade list :mushroom:
Looking for strong terrestrial fruiters for an outdoor beds experiment:
Agaricus Bitorquis, Agaricus Augustus, Agaricus blazei/subrufescens, Stropharia Rugoso-annulata, Clitocybe Nuda (blewits), and any species or other genus that you think work outdoors.
Also, any commercially viable Pleurotus, cold or hot strains.
Thanks for the Q&A, trades, and all the posters & teachers that have come before us  :skol:

I know everyone is being critical. There are a lot of problems that you need to address. I get the feeling your not in America? More information would be helpful.  Standard practice is not to grow button mushrooms in bags. They are usually grown in trays or on the concrete or solid floor. Day 1 pic has light dusting of grey mold all over it. Once contaminated there is not much you can do to salvage it. Especially on day 1. I suggest read and ask and do several small grows till you get a handle on how things should look and work. The more info we have the more help we can be.

buttons can be grown on bags, just most people don't do it because it's so labor intensive compared to trays.  just a lot less investment than a proper tray/net shelving system.

Hey,

Yeah, I used grains (seeds), and mixed them with the compost!

Hey!, I'm not in America, and information is very hard to come across. I'll follow your advice and do smalls grows until I get the hang of it. I'll keep the post updated as much as posible. Thanks for your input.
