Has anybody ever tried growing Matsutake mushrooms?

There are these mushrooms that grow naturally in the Tamba mountains of Japan, called Matsutake. They are considered culinary delicacy, like truffles, and go for hundreds of dollars for an ounce.

I was wondering why nobody has tried to grow "knockoff" Matsutake mushrooms on a large scale and start selling them in the markets for cheaper. Is it really hard to grow or something?

They grow wild in Central Oregon too. Last I checked they were going for $18/lb though not hundreds per ounce.

They are also mycorrhizal. Which for now means they are only available from mother natures kitchen. No indoor cultivation for these.

The ones that are grown in the Tamba regions are the super expensive ones... in Japan they go for that much, for the real authentic matsutake mushrooms.

The ones grown in Washington and Korea and other places are a lot cheaper.

They were only $1200/# in 1998 or some really dry year...yawn

I'm pretty sure they grow around here (NE USA) as well, but have a very particular habitat... something to do with a certain kind or the right amount of clay in the soil.  I've heard of old timers that can spot the right habitat from a boat, go there and find them by the bagful.  Never found one myself though!  They do fetch a high price, wish I had the hunting skills to find them.

I have seen them for sale in the North east at farmers markets.  wild harvested, and lots of other nice stuff I can never find hahha

I harvest them by the trunk load here in oregon and sell them to my customers $12# one fancy Japanese restaurant chef tells me they are just as good if not better than the ones back home. And just because the Mycelium is mycorhizal doesn't mean you can't cultivate them we just haven't found a conclusive method yet. I'm working  on developing a patent for golden chanties.

I would really like to try Matsutake. Haven't seen them for sale though - I've heard the flavor described as spicy. what do they taste like?

Yeah kind of peppery with a earthy mushroom smell they mostly smell not taste strong. The ones that sell for outrageous prices are Tricholoma matsutake found in Japan the ones I harvest are Tricholoma magnivelare but I don't think there is much difference in aroma unless your one of those "wine tasting" types however the dirt they are found in can change the flavor slightly as with the chanties I find as well.

That is true, but it's a pretty safe general statement to make to a hobbyist grower wanting to try to grow a new species.  Unless you've got serious experience and are willing to put in a LOT of effort, it's just easier to say hey, they're mycorrhizal - don't bother trying.

Wasn't there a company that found a way to grow morels, but the taste/quality just ended up being shitty compared to the wild ones?

Yeah there is a guy in Michigan that developed a method for morels using a certain compost out of leaf litter I believe he plans to sell 800,000# of them a year, so I guess people still enjoy them. And good point above sometimes I forget how clueless it is to be a newbie to all this.
