Why is caffeine a laxative?
    #2399540 - 03/03/04 06:43 PM (13 years, 25 days ago)

Does anyone else have a problem with caffeine being a laxative for them?  Why does this phenomenon occur?  I like my black tea too much to stop drinking it, but still...

It appears to stimulate the bowels. Caffeine is an adenosine antagonist, but I don't think there are adenosine receptors in the GI tract, so I think it has more to do with the its collateral adreno-activity.

By blocking the adenosine receptors in the part of the brain responsible for sleep regulation, it creates a "fight or flight" situation by calling for the genetic replication proopiomelanocortin, and its subsequent enzymatic cleaving into, among other things, adrenocorticotropic hormone in the anterior pituitary, which then enters the blood stream, and travels down to the adrenal glands, where it signals the release of epinephrine and norepinephrine.
