To get the most out of each bag, which is the most expensive part, you want to supplement with 20% bran and slightly over hydrate then sterilize. Spawn thin, one quart jar can do 12-20 bags.

What's the reasoning behind slightly over hydrating and how is that measured? Why spawn so thin as well? Wouldn't low spawn rate and wet sub invite bacterial contams?

Only reishi you can spawn so thin. Extra water content is for loss during the 3 month time it takes to form conks

I gathered that. The point was if he means 5lb bags. There is a big difference between 20 5lb bags and 20 1lb bags. More in amazement that 1 quart can do 20 5lb bags.

1 quart to 20 5lb bags is a 1% spawn rate, which will work but is very low. 5% is normally the lowest I would go if you are making your own spawn. And you can store your jars for much longer than a month. I periodically store grain masters for several months and just pull them when I need them. For instance I just pulled an Elm oyster grain master made 5 months ago. Spawned to more grain and they fully colonized in 5 days. No slowed growth.

Typically, what I do is after a jar is colonized 100% I'll transfer to a zip lock and put in the fridge if I need the jar for something else. I've kept white oyster grain in the fridge for longer than a month and it didn't seem to bother them, but other strains may be different, and if I really paid attention to yield, I might have noticed a decline, but no problems so far. I do make sure I rotate them, and use the oldest first.
