Cactus for a SE facing window?
    #23994767 - 01/09/17 10:20 AM (7 years, 21 days ago)

I've got a nice bright northern hemisphere SE facing window.  I'm looking for some small year round window sill cactus that bloom profusely (of the legal kind, no looks).  Small to no spines, it'll be in an area with lots of traffic.  Ideas?

Either don't get a cactus, or a spineless species like Zygocactus(Christmas Cactus) or Epiphyllum, Rhipsalis, etc. (Even some of these have spines). Not a lot of cacti bloom "profusely" as I think of it, but Christmas Cactus will usually give many flowers when it does bloom, and there's lots of colors available too.

Echinopsis hybrid cactus stay relatively small, and flower profusely, though I do not know if window light is enough for them to flower.

Any Schick hybrid is worth taking a look at

What's that you say, no cactus blooms profusely?

Lots of the echinopsis hybrids getnao covered in blooms that you can't see the cactus.
Not sure how the echinopsis do year round on a window sill though (do they need a dormancy period for proper bloom?).  Spines are OK, just prefer not to have something with super gnarly spines.  All though I could just put a "warning plant may bite" sign on it.  The space is a Commons area for students and college kids can be idiots.

I'm not sure if Echinopsis hybrids can be considered "small", but if not you can always look into xChamaelobivia: they bloom equally well, come in various colours and have several flushes of flowers throughout the year. Parodia and Rebutia have spectacular flowers but unfortunately only once per season. A number of Mammillaria species bloom regularly throughout the year but their flowers are rather modest.

Yeah kinda what I meant was they don't really go on flowering throughout the seasons, and some produce ephemeral flowers
