My first fruiting chamber - off the grid..
    #23994364 - 01/09/17 03:53 AM (7 years, 21 days ago)

Greetings and thanks for your time,

I currently have 4 pf tek jars which are almost fully colonized.  Preparing my first fruiting chamber... I live in a place which is far removed from the 'modern' world.  I have a solar battery (small - 72 Ah), and the only things I have access to which are suitable for fruiting chambers are an old pretzel drum (4 inches in diameter, 8 inches tall, clear plastic), and a rubbermaid container (6 inches by 10 inches in width, 10 inches tall).  The rubbermaid is black, but I have glued a 6inchX6inch glass on the lid.  So here we go with questions:

How important is light?  I don't have artificial light, so does the entire terrarium need to be clear plastic, or will the small 6X6 glass at the top provide enough light? I thought of just leaving it in my house, which gets a pretty good amount of natural light - will this be sufficient?  I could get artificial light but since I have a DC setup, all I can find are solar lights (dunno if these can work, they are LED).

I have seen and read many teks on terrariums (maybe too many).  Is the shotgun terrarium my best option?  I worry b/c I live in a very humid environment in which molds are present (and since its in the bush, I'm not likely to 'sterilize' the environment completely).  Will drilling so many holes leave me vulnerable to contams?  Is there a better option, like the monotub (I could try to order some polyfil, though it will take months to get here).  Or can I just put the cakes on some perlite, seal off the rubbermaid, and forget about it?

I realize these questions are basic and I apologize for my lack of knowledge, and for (due to circumstances and location) my inability to follow exactly any tek.  I simply want a container which will be relatively resistant to contams, use perlite, not require artificial light, and (hopefully) not require massive amounts of daily attention. If the little cakes fruit I'll be happy - I am not too concerned about maximizing yields, I just want a modest solution for some modest mushroom production.

Thank you in advance
