Don't open a dirty plate in front of a flow hood. If you got to clean a contaminated plate use a sab.

If you have bubbles on top of your agar after poring a quick pass with a propane torch makes them pop. Agar like glass.

When soaking grain, use cold water (especially if you soak for 24h+) and don't leave it hydrating in a warm place. Talking from personal experience, it started fermenting (probably yeast) and smelled like vomit...

Cut a hole in the lid of your sab and glue in a magnifying glass, helps get a good close up of the plate surface to spot contams and be more precise during transfers

Drill a flame port into the lower side of the sab, leave the torch outside the hole and simply stick the scalpel/syringe through the hole into the flame. Helps keep air currents way down because you're not taking your hands in and out of the sab between transfers

I don't know what happen man... but the grain was bubbling and smelled like vomit. Anyway I cleaned the PC, sterilized it and am soaking second batch right now... hmmm, maybe the boiling water actually makes sense, it could kill some of the assholes on the surface

its near boiling from the tap. i turned the hot water up on my waterheater. be careful doing that. you can scald yourself easily.
and it losses its temp quickly. its not like im bucket tekking wbs... although...
its going to be slightly bubbly/fermented. leave some grains stuck to the pot and the sprout in a few days :p dont dump them in the drain.

Fooman's WBS prep helped me be so much more efficient. I hope you can get it going this time around!

im fine doing 24hr soak no simmer but reviewing foomans tek i basically already do his tek just not with a 'rolling boil'
maybe i could bucket tek the birdseed to really keep the heat up and get 100% water content quicker.. ill play around with it. just as long as its hydrated and doesnt clump, im good.

Do NOT rely on cooking times with grain prep. it doesnt matter if it takes someone a 30 min soak or 40 min soak, the volume of grain and water is not constant, each stove is different and their are many other factors that have small influence
rely on manually checking your grains to ensure theyre at proper hydration. this avoids under cooking them and over cooking them. thanks Tmethyl!
