best way for him to grow?
I'm a fella with some some BRF Golden Teacher cakes (first grow) that will be ready in a couple or three weeks. I love the looks of the Damion5050 tek and my heart tells me to go with this tek.
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595/fpart/1/vc/1
However, there is the whole cake on perlite, dunk and roll tek that sounds like it's mouth breathing idiot proof and my heart tells me to go with this tek. I understand the perlite tek would be less likely to be contamination but BOY HOWDY I like the word "bulk."
If you were guiding a new grower, what tek would you tell him, with confidence, to grow with and why? Please post links if you would.
Thanks!! Van Agar

I'd say learn agar off prints and use swabs.
Fruit the cakes as they are. Dunk, roll, place on upside down jar lids, wait 24 to 48 hours, lightly mist, fan (aka scooping the air and gently waving to get evaporation going), repeat when they look dry.. and since by then you'll know agar, you can choose genetics off your cakes to do bulk with. If you've kept up properly on agar and have strong genetics use those for blenderless liquid inoculation or drop an agar wedge into grains.
What kind of PC do you have?

Thanks Adden
I'm using a Presto 01781 23-Quart pressure cooker and am using spores . I'm going to do spore prints with my first nice shroom. I have agar and a sleeve of dishes but haven't used them yet.
You would recommend placing whole cakes on jar lids > aluminum foil

Yes absolutely foil just leads to standing water and makes the roll pointles. The closer you can get the cake to the perlite without touching the better. The evaporation on that 1-2mm casing layer (roll) is the biggest pinning trigger next to light.
Taking a print resets the genetics, so take a bunch, and take tissue from the insides of the stems on your best fruits and put it on agar.
Oh and don't forget you can't name vendors here since they sell spores for microscopy only. Just for future reference.

You can also use pastyplates for agar. It's no-pour so you don't need a flow hood just a still air box. Nobody uses glove boxes anymore either. Make sure to use the search engine and feel free to ask any questions. In my signature there should be a link to AMU Q&A, which is an ongoing thread for quick questions.

You can use a SGFC for cakes and trays and top fruiting. (I'd only use cakes. It's what it's constructed for).
You can use a monotub for trays, top fruiting, and bulk.
So if say, you're about ready to do bulk and your SGFC is full, but you've got some PF jars ready, you can construct the mono and top fruit the 2nd round of jars in there with medium-to-loose poly all around.
I like to keep it simple..sgfc for cakes, monos for everything else.. but if you've got a spare mono, spare cakes, and no room in the sgfc, then you cake top fruit jars in there. You can also top fruit jars with a bag over them with some holes in it.
I noticed SGFC's lose their efficacy when they're too large. The biggest I'd ever go again is just enough room for 18 tall boys, and as tall as 3 cakes from the top of your perlite. I forget what size that is, mine got a big Crack in it because it vent from too much weight.
You can make an extra small one if you want because at some point in the hobby you might want to run genetics side by side and it would be the simplest way.

^ You can run this too. Some people use a cheese grater, others just crumble.. the last time I did trays in like 2001 or 2002, before monos or sgfc, I'd just put the trays in with a loose lid and scoop the air out (not fanning) and had success.
Keep an eye on cakes and learn how much moisture you need to see on the top. It'll help you learn when a tray or mono needs water. Also keep an eye for when people say your pins are too dry or too wet. It's good to know.

Thanks again Adden. I'm going with Rye Berries next and would like to try Damion5050's Coir Tek in the rear future. Is there some reason that this tek isn't a good way to go? Thanks again VA
