Homemade Coco Coir 1

Recently I went on vacation to Hawaii and, being the mushroom lover I am, decided to create my own coco coir for use as a casing layer. The main difference between this coconut coir and what you may find in a store is simply found in the quality of the coconut. Most coco coir you find has come from plantation coconuts from somewhere like the Philippines. These coconuts are runts compared to Hawaiin coconuts. And as an added bonus, the coconuts I found had been weathered by traveling in the nutrient rich Hawaiin Ocean.
First, I went to the beach and collected some coconuts. They're fairly easy to find, considering they wash up all around the island. You're looking for old coconuts that have already been split open by traveling in the waves. Ignore green and uncracked coconuts. (Don't take anything that is obviously a coconut onto your plane. This is considered smuggling due to Hawaii's agriculture laws).
Next, take off the chitinous outer husk of the coconut. This part is useless to us because we're looking for the high-nutrient, absorptive material.
Now begin tearing the coconuts to shreds with your hands. The fibers should tear off rather easily, allowing you to be left with a big bag of what looks like hair. (Beware of bugs! I found about 50 earwig-looking fellows while doing this)

Now, set the bag out in the sun to dry. While this step is not necessary, I still highly recommend it because it makes the upcoming steps easier. (Plus it reduces the chance of it rotting in your suitcase).
After this, you want to take some shears, scissors, or whatever you have and cut the fibers into shorter strands. Again, this isn't entirely necessary but it makes the upcoming step easier.

Finally, take the coconut fibers and ground them with either a blender or a coffee grinder. I have a Ninja blender so this step goes fairly smooth- but for those of you who don't have a "heavy-duty" blender, add a little at a time to avoid tangling/ breaking your blender.

Voila! Your coco coir is ready. It may not be perfect and you may still see "hairs" sticking out of the shredded mass, but this will work more than fine. (Mushrooms don't know what perfect is!)

I found them near a river/ocean mix, I guess that would have had been a good thing to note.

Plus lots of the excess salt would be lost in the prep

I add just enough water to my coir so it would have all stayed in

Isn't it illegal to transport any biological material between the island and the mainland?
This is interesting and I would like to see results but just curious.
