spray the water inside the SAB with your sprayer on fine mist mode
I assume that is to "wet" airborne contaminants and have them drop with the water?
Will that not introduce new contaminants from the water used?
Newbie here so thank you very much any help!
Cheers

They wouldn't be airborne contaminants, and tap water is usually clean.
I don't bother spraying anymore.

Ok thank you very much for the answer. My water comes from a well (hence no chlorine) so I think I am better off if I avoid spraying.
Cheers!

Hello
Still hesitating about whether to make a no-lid inverted box like this, or to go lid-side-up and lid attached.
Reasons for going inverted : - Can sit box on top of towel to act as kind of gasket - Some people have opaque lids so no other choice - Slightly larger working area due to box taper
My thoughts/reasons for going the other way: - My lid is flat and transparent - good visibility - The base of the box has some structural support lines which slightly impair visibility - No reason I can't lie a towel in the bottom of the box.
I have an oven tray that will fit in both situations, to lift the petris/jars/etc a bit off the bottom. I get the impression, not just from this tek but in general, that the norm is to invert the box. Any reasons/advantages that I missed out on? Should I just follow the damn tek already, or would the nicely transparent lid be a good reason to go lid-side-up?
Cheers!

Just follow the instructions in the thread.
One might say it's simple as fuck.
Do not indulge your impulse to complicate it.

Fuck the lid, put a towel down on a table and that's it.
The main reason it's lid side down is cause it's easy to load your stuff and to spray it down after.
To load, you just put your stuff on the towel and put the box over. You then lift the edge closest to you and mist your soap water across the work surface instead of down into the box.

I over-engineered mine, and I absolutely love it. I'm using glass for my lid, and I have outstanding visibility. Here's my write up on mine: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27997297
As long as you end up with still air, you can make your SAB however you want to.

Cool thanks everyone. I've seen it written a few times but sometimes I just think too much. And initially from reading around it sounded like the inverted way was the exception or the workaround.

Mind if I ask, what's the reason for not misting down into the box? And wouldn't it be better to mist via the arm holes? What you're suggesting here sounds like it would agitate the air more than necessary.
Cheers

I'll volunteer for that one. Misting over an upside down box pulls whatever is in the air down into the SAB with the mist. then turning it over or putting the lid on would cause more airflow than simply lifting a corner a tad bit then setting it back down. By lifting the whole box you can easily spray all sides, something that may be more difficult in the arm holes.

Plus the misting "agitates" the air anyway and you let it settle before going to work.

I have no clue what the heck I'm doing wrong. I bought a 66q sterlite box from walmart and used a coffee tin from Walmart also, the McDonalds one.
I have an induction stove
No matter how hard I pushed, I could not get the damn plastic to push through! The plastic melted (I smelled it), but nothing doing? I ended up using a flathead screwdriver to try to finish the job for just one arm hole and the plastic cracked right through the middle
How in the world do I do this!?

I used a 6" duct adapter to melt through my tote. I found it took a LOT of heat to get it hot enough, and even then it took around 4 rounds of reheating it and melting some more before it made it's way through.
That duct adapter is also thinner / sharper than a coffee can. I heated it in an old junk skillet that I didn't mind melting plastic on, and also had to use aluminum foil to help trap and hold the heat so that it didn't cool down to quickly. I was using the large burner on my stove, and it was almost maxed out in order to get it hot enough.
If that 66 qt. tote is broken beyond repair, you kind of did yourself a favor. I would recommend getting at least a 100+ qt. tote to have enough room to work and be comfortable. Many recommend a 200 qt. tote.

Thanks. I think maybe coffee cans are made differently now than they used to be? I'm not sure. I am gonna have to find a 110q, even the 66q are hard to find nowadays
Did you get the duct adapter at Home Depot or Lowe's?

You'll thank yourself going to the 110 qt. That's what I have and it's SO much better than my last SAB. (My old one was a 66 qt.)
I actually had the duct adapter already on hand, but it shouldn't matter where you get it from. As long as it's galvanized steel it should do the job.

Hopefully you sussed this out by now, but make sure you are putting the bottom of the can on the stove to heat up. It felt counterintuitive to me - I wanted to make a hole with the hole-y end, dammit. But after a minute of thinking I realized that would make life harder. I went through both holes in about six minutes total.
Could also be related to your induction burner I guess 🤷.

That's not necessary at all, it doesn't have to be the bottom.
If the burning isn't working then just get a cheap key hole saw, drill a few holes in a row along your traced circle, and use the key hole saw to very slowly and carefully cut out the circle. It helps if something is bracing it from the underside so there is less flex.
Just take you time and don't get impatient. Don't let the plastic be smarter than you.
