Baking Brown Rice and Multispore Inoc.
    #2398754 - 03/03/04 04:17 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Is it possible to bake brown rice as a way of pasturizing for sterilization. If this is possible how long should it be baked.

Is it possible to use a syringe for inoculation for a jar of Just Brown Rice. And if this is possible, how long would you expect colonization to be at 86 degree farienheit.

Also it would seem that if you used a whole grain jar flushes would be bigger and fuller. Is this in fact the case???

Thanks,

dan17511

Well steaming is preffered to baking. I think this is due to drying
out issues, as an oven will cook your cakes into solid lumps.

It is possible to colonise just rice, but rice flower and verm
are far superior. The verm adds air spaces to the substrate, and
promotes growth, were as with just rice, it will cook into a solid lump, with no air pockets, this makes it much harder for the
mycelium to colonise the center.

no this is not the case, as a cake or jar brf + verm will
out produce whole grains.

Whole grains are used as they break apart, and each grain becomes an inoculation point for coloniseing bulk substrates like straw.

you want to sterlize it, not pasterize. baking takes longer to make something sterile, plus you will need to add more water(some will evaporate).

you can't use just brown rice, you need to add something so there are air pockets. flour compacts to much. colonization varies to much to make a guess.

whole grain jars(rye, millet) require sterilation. you can make a casing just out of rye but you will need to provide a layer of verm on top. some ppl find it hard to friut with just rye grain. most grains are spawned onto compost, manure, straw. the flushes will increase and the quanity will most likey increase.
