Cold temps tonight
    #23987056 - 01/06/17 04:44 PM (7 years, 24 days ago)

So my shop where I keep my babies has a radiant heater on a 4 stage temp controller that stays around 73 degrees unless it gets super cold and the heater can't keep up. Tonight it will drop to single digits and my shop will probably struggle to stay in the low 60s, may even reach 58-59. I have a supplement heater that I can use but absolutely hate to. I currently have some cakes that are have been birthed over a week that have not pinned and some cakes that I'm trying to get a third flush from but not looking like they will. Should I go ahead and turn the supplement heat on to keep the heat up or just let it roll knowing it will be 58-60 when they wake up in the morning?

One night of low temperatures won't hurt much. I did a lot of grows at 65F.

If it's not a permanent condition you should be OK. The lowest temp I fruited cubensis was 56F... Did not perform well but it worked.

Ok I think I will just leave them be then. I figure worst case it will get in the mid upper 50s but will rebound once sun comes out. I don't really like turning that other heater on as it uses more power, dries thing out and makes me nervous about fires.

I've cold fruited and colonized in 50 to 60 degree temps. I don't believe in heating my house if I can wear a hoodie beanie and socks. Usually my cakes flush once but give 6 to 7g each. This morning I had to move them into my water heater closet coz they were colder than a witch's tit. Should be fine tho.

You need 75F to get good results.

I'd say ~7g per cake that only take a few more days and flush once is dandy.

I'll show you some of my LI quart jars in 10 days after I birth them. Those will be nice I can't wait.

Well glad I didn't add any more heat. Just checked and the coldest it got was 60. Lights have been on for 2 hours now and it already up to 65. I don't think I will ever need the supplemental heat unless it stays in the single digits for days and that is rare. Oh and got a few pins on some cakes that had stalled on the third flush. I think the cold may have helped.

Cold doesn't help cubes at all. They're tropical. Cold shocking is detrimental to this species even though you'll see noobs saying to do it all day long

They take longer but they'll do it. I might not be the biggest grower here but I can say from experience it'll still work but it's not ideal. Colder temperatures help me with my agar work, too. Everything slows down.

In the 50s and 60 ranges my cakes might flush once but at least it is all at once, and when it's spent it's spent.. 6g to 7g per cake near consistently off MS, just adds a week or two to everything. It is nice though that you don't wonder about second or third flushes, when it does its thing it's spent and you move on. TBH I'd rather that than pulling the dehydrator out here, there, and everywhere whenever a cake farts some out.

Agreed.

Cubes can fruit at temps even as low as 50F, but its not so good for them. They grow better in 60-70F.

As said, the metabolism of growth sounds down to a crawl when the temps are consistenly 50F.

Well I try and keep at 73 when my radiant heater can keep up. I've noticed at that temp once you have pins it is just a matter of couple of days and they are pretty much ready to pick.

yup, faster growth at tropical temps.

At 70F, its basically ideal temperature.

A couple nights of 50F is fine thou.

So should I lower my temp controller to 70-71? Right now it is set to come on at 72 and shut off at 73.
