Way too many to narrow down to one. Different shows for different times and spaces.:gd_icon:

Yes, none of the shows I posted above I would call all time favorites, I didn't even list greek theatre runs of 85 and 89, which are some favorites of mine, as a rule I find I like the sound on west coast shows the best, they were more loose and trippy, and known for being more balls to the wall rock and roll out east, not saying things didn't get strange out east, but prefer the west coast shows sounds.  I would recommend shows from Frost Amphitheater, Greek Theatre, Shoreline, Red Rocks to name a few.

I am curious how some of you younger guys/gals like the grateful dead, I am in my early 30's, and never got to see Jerry dead, but I have never heard another jam band which makes me feel like their music does, and I kind of find that strange because I have tried to get into other bands material, but it just never gave me the same feeling, I really don't know what it is.  Many people describe something special about the dead which goes beyond words, I think that's what I am feeling.

I try to turn younger people onto them, but they will often be turned off by the country type sound the boys sometimes express in their music, at least this is what my brothers girlfriend said, that they sounded country, which I can see on a song or two they sound this way and might not be everyone's cup of tea, but as a whole the country sound was just one small part of their music, there are many genres one can hear within their music, funk, country, rock, world, reggae, all sorts of genres, that's one of things I like about their music.  I prefer 1979-1990 though, which was the Brent Mydland era, yeah Jerry was ragged from heroin addiction and smoking tons of pall-malls, but the music is really interesting sounding, like the Scarlet>Fire from 10/21/83, so interesting sounding, and I think the boys were playing some of their best music between the years 89-90, like the sound of many songs had matured.  If you listen to Jack Straw, Cassidy, Deal from the earlier years compared to the later years, you will see what I am talking about, the songs got more jammed out as the years went on, they matured fully.

HELL YEAH BRENT MYDLAND!!!

the dead was at there best with brent.  he really pushed the band to new heights.

btw, i'm only 23 and i'm a pretty hardcore dead head.  there music hits me like only one other band has.  i'm also super into the 60s and acid scene, so the grateful dead fall right in there.  ken kesey and the merry prankster, as well as the dead, were a huge part of my identity development.  i felt like i found who i was with there music.  i may still be lost, but the grateful dead has guided me through very dark times, along with my other fav band.

i will say, that there is no band like the dead.  they are so mystical and the way they get down and jam is just so great.  the grateful dead are amazing beyond words.

I fucking hate you... God damn, I love you...
But we both know if we stick together, we'll just tear ourselves apart
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy, when skies are grey
You are my heroin, but there's an abscess... God damn, I miss the vein!

26 yr old here and the Grateful Dead is in my top 5 bands.  I love the XM radio station makes my drive to and from work so much better.  So nice to have it playing on my jam box kicked back at the beach by the fire with some shark rods outs and a dose of mesc HCL.

@fennario I understand that their country component is the reason why a lot of people get turned off of them, but the band just wouldnt be the same without that country/folk style. its part of what gives them that good ol american feel and one of the main reasons I like them so much and could listen to them all day while sober.
I think most younger people come to discover the dead like me -thru people suggesting them as some of the best tripping music, but youre probably not gonna stick with them in soberlife unless you can dig americana. Ive stuck with them but I'm not a massive deadhead or anything, I really only like to listen to their 72-77 period and 89-91

I always found their country tinged tunes to be just as trippy, like in a goofy trippy way, I mean listen to Mexicali blues with a head full of acid, Big River is a favorite of mine sober or not, it shreds, especially '74 versions.

I love America, and the grateful dead are America as fuck.

Classic Anthem-of-the-Sun-era show. Dark Star>China Cat>The Eleven medley is super interesting. A couple of songs were debuted that night, I believe China Cat's one of them.
