Well this was exciting. I was just trying to make some Malt Extract Agar and figured I could speed things up by heating the agar in the microwave in one of my baby bottles for Liquid culture. Put it in for 2 minutes with a marble to aid in the mixing and next thing I knew there is a large bang and my power went out. Well in the aftermath I discovered the bottle exploded with enough force that the marble projected itself with enough force to dent the mircrowave door and the door actually opened and the bottle of scalding hot agar exploded all over the kitchen. The force of the door was enough to shatter several of my petri dishes that were nearby. Holy cow! And to think i was working right in front of the microwave just seconds before. Very lucky me or my dogs werent burned! I wasnt sterilizing per say but be careful guys, that was much more intense than I could have predicted!

Yea... Closed containers with liquids in them don't do well in microwaves.

That's no different to a PC with no valves, nothing wrong with the microwave.

for future reference... this is absolutely pointless. its a liquid. you can mix it by swirling it in the container.

I understand what you did. I heat up my agar in the microwave in a qt jar the lid off of course. If making no pour plates its good to see how hard or soft it will be. If testing out different recipe for no pour i recommend it. If its just the right hardest you can scoop out the amount need per plate and pc like normal. Why did you use a marble

Well i tried it again and it worked great with the lid loose, glad the microwave didnt break. However my dollar store petri dishes were not autoclave safe...

Lots of containers have PP5 bases but use a different type for the lids.

If its the dollor tree look for the 10 pack of mini sauce container. They are pp5 and lids are too. They are small but only take like 10ml of agar to fill out and are great for dumping fully colonised into li or lc. Adviod number 3 plastic they melt so easy

microwaves have zero place in this hobby, unless youre reheating some food.
