They are apparently going to start salting certain roads here when it starts snowing heavily.

The previous owners of my Xterra were from wisconsin, I had to literally sawzall through three control arms, and both of the leaf springs in the rear.

It ain't that old of a car either, just turned 10 years old.  You can tell the new stuff is a lot more comfortable lol.

Maybe someday soon, got shit going on right now, trying to get the landlady to fix my washer, has been broken before christmas, am certifiably pissed.... one day, when I'm just listening to music in bed, the door on my bedroom just fucking falls off.... I pay $1800/mo for a complete shithole, getting some financial logistics and starting house hunting...... Hopefully this won't kick me out to the burbs....

Anyways, I guess the truth lies somewhere in the middle:

"Why doesn't Oregon salt the streets or sidewalks? I realize it only snows a little each year, but I have seen people and cars sliding and falling.

Oregon has long shunned the rock salt used in other states to help melt snow and ice during winter storms. Until recently, the Oregon state line from California, Nevada or Idaho was often marked by packed snow on the roadways.

Welcome to Oregon, indeed.

That's changed in recent years. The Oregon Department of Transportation in 2012 launched a pilot program, salting two stretches of road near the state's border to avoid the sudden change in conditions.

But most of the state still doesn't use rock salt, aka sodium chloride or table salt.

Both ODOT and the Portland Bureau of Transportation instead treat roads with magnesium chloride, a chemical salt that's applied as a liquid solution. It's considered easier on the environment and less corrosive to vehicles and roadways."

The thing about using rock salt here is I don't think it's going to damage cars here the way it does out east- out east they use that shit multiple times a week, and since the place stays frozen all winter season the salt levels remain elevated until it starts melting and rain comes- in portland snow is rare, and it'll rain within a week of it snowing, it will lower any salinity levels in the soil, etc.  Not so easy though I guess in the eastern side of the state where rain is more scarce.

I Understand the rent thing completely (though we have a relatively cheap 2 bedroom, we're paying $1200 a month, but I need a job because I can't work construction w/ back injury).

But yeah I'm in the SE area, so if you are ever down to get a beer I know some breweries or pubs we could snag a beer at.

Oi, geezer. I recognise the words as being English, but, what the fuck are you on about.

Barely had to turn the heating on so far this winter. My area more or less comes to a standstill if we get over three inches of the snowy stuff.

I measured 14 inches but that was clase to everything that the wind fell on to.  So the open area was 10 inches.

I've still never been in snow

So funny though because I used to go to Seattle all the time during the holidays and I've even been up to Canada and Alaska.
The closest I've ever been to "snow" was in Palm Springs when I took a cherry lift or tram up a mountain but that was more so ice than actual snow.

Snows mostly melted now and my car is well salted.

I honestly think all the salt that gets washed up on your windshield is more dangerous than the snow.

Yeah, it's pretty bogus. Cars in front of you spray shit all over your windshield, and you try to use the windshield wipers and it just smears all over and you can't see, so then you use some wiper fluid, but there is ice all over the wipers so it doesn't do shit.

Fuck winter.

Is the upper parking lot accessible/unlocked?  I want to drive up it if it hasn't been plowed

I've got a pretty capable vehicle so it makes this weather fun, and I know a ton of people aren't out driving so the roads are somewhat 'untouched'.

I wanna be in like Canada or Alaska or something where there's snow on the ground all winter long and nobody gives a fuck cuz everyone has four wheel drive and snowmobile anyway.

The biggest reason they use so much salt on our roads is cuz the snow melts during the day and forms long stretches of black ice during the night and morning commuters get screwed by it.

Also we usually get rain and sleet in between periods of snow so there's often layers of ice hiding under the snow. But it's not real hard to get decent enough traction on fresh snow. Ice is the problem.

Yeah I'd rather be up in the far north and deal with legit snow instead of the silly stuff we usually get.

yah, i have lived here like 7 years and nothing like this has ever happened, usually just a light dusting, sneeze of of a snow......... am really busy now today, trying to work, cleaning up house, trying to contact a realtor, bugging my landlady over my washing machine which has been broke/uninstalled for 3 weeks.... actually there is no upper parking lot, and we have no guest parking lot.... fortunately i live on the bottom floor and can just enter this place through sliding glass patio doors in the back through my ground store parking lot....... visitors have to park off street though....... i dunno, maybe tonight if you ain't busy.... trying to work up the courage to dress up and go to the corner store and pick up some IPAs lol.........  think you have my #? should text or talk sometime
