Starting a cyanescens/allenii colony
    #23982584 - 01/04/17 09:37 PM (7 years, 26 days ago)

I took a small handful of wood chips that has been partially colonized by cyanescens/allenii mycelia.

I currently have them in a small tupperware with the lid askew (covering it kind of but not enough to seal in air or moisture).

My goal is to get to the point that I have a thriving mycelia colony, which I can then transplant into friendly habitats.

My current plan is to get a bag of red-alder wood chips, soak these, and then cover what I already have in the tupperware and wait. The end result hopefully being that I could pull some chips from here to inoculate new beds, and add in new chips as the colony eats the old ones.

Another idea I've had is to try to transfer some of the mycelia from the woodchips to agar on a petri dish, and then transfer wedges into either fresh woodchips (then basically follow the above plan), or into a liquid culture.

My bias toward the woodchip based colony (over a liquid culture) is that I feel like it will be the easiest to spread.

Thoughts?

I'd just expand from wood chips to more wood chips. Adding agar pieces to wood chips might not work very well. The agar probably will just dry up before very much myc can transfer to the wood.

Agar to chips is pointless unless you're taking a ton of old dishes, throwing them in a blender with a couple dozen spore prints, and slurrying an area. That's as close as agar should get to chips.. when you're throwing it away.

How important is the type of hardwood chip in your experience?  If Hickory is more readily available than alder would this work alright?

This. Just make sure they're not treated or flavored. Ace hardware has them for like 5 bucks a bag and it'll fill 3 quart jars and some change. Never go pellets or pine you will fail.

Interesting, my 60% hickory pellet and 40% hickory chip spawn bags failed when using LC to inoculate.  Thought it might be because I didn't use colonized grain jars instead of LC.  Now I'm doubting using the rest of my massive pellet bag.  Care to elaborate why the pellets don't work?  Maybe not enough space for the mycelium?

Do you recommend keeping it in the tupperware for the time being? If so, should I have the lid sealed / add any liquid? Im going to get woodchips today and have them soaking tonight, so I should be able to add them in tomorrow. Hoping things are okay until then

I dunno I just always read about people failing with pellets. Pretty much all the time. I forget why. I think stevo figured it out idk he's awesome with that stuff.

If you want to colonize wood it is always better to use grain spawn instead of LC IME.

I tried to use LC to inoculate wood chips and the mycelium always had a hard time to colonize the wood.

An agar wedge works much better but grain is the first choice.

Always. LC is if you're dumping without a care in the world. Grains if you got things to do and chips to knock up.

Update:

Boiled a bunch of hickory wood chips and have spread the mycelia I collected into 2 large tupperware and a mason jar.  I didn't pressure sterilize the tupperwares (obviously) or the jar, but cleaned all and then wiped down with lysol before adding the wood chips and mycelia.

Wish me luck

Sounds good dude, I'm excited :awesomenod:

Got six Cyanescens jars going myself (and a little Ovoid), can't seem to find allenii spores anywhere though.

I've been looking for Allenii spores for a while.. I was told mushrooms.com would have them but that was a month ago and they are still showing out of stock
