Is the only reason you use vermi to hold water? I mean is it possible to test other water holding compands in replace of veri? THere is no nutrion in vermi is there?

no nutrition correct. you could replace verm with something but what is something? i don't know of anything really similar to verm and people have tried coir and resulted in contamination.

Yes, verm is used mainly for its water holding ability, but
also for its lack of nutrients, this means contams find it hard to
get a foot hold on the surface they land on.

Many other things have been tried and work, gravel, perlite,
rockwool, wood chips, lava rock, and water retaining crystals used
in hanging baskets to name the ones that spring to mind.

Verm is the best of these choices. Can you think of others to try?
I'm always lookng for new casing ideas.

You could replace vermiculite with growool. Holds 1/3 more water than vermiculite, 17% air filled porosity, 100% inert and pH is neutral.

Temps my way in peak summer are HOT, so things didn't go too well at this point. Cased growool cakes 1st flush.

2nd flush and two growool cakes rolled in growool -- just battered by the heat.

growool embellished millet trays

tray 1, 1st flush.

tray 2, 1st flush

tray 1, 2nd flush

tray 2, 2nd flush

tray 1, 3rd flush (at this point the heat went ballistic my way, hardly worth bothering with shrooms in February's inferno)

tray 2, 3rd flush

growool works, high temps don't. What I also suggest is case in coir, use the growool in the substrate. Then you can grow 100% free of vermiculite and be safe from injesting glass fibers of the growool. I'll repeat the growool tests in the cooler & saner months.

Convert Metric and Imperial.
