Growing on Manure Pile
    #2398175 - 03/03/04 01:52 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Hey guys,
I've been growing mushies for about a year now and I need some advice. I live on a horse farm and have MASSIVE mounds of horse waste on my property. The piles consist of pine shavings/horse waste and some hay. Do you think that it would work to throw a few cakes in the pile and let her rip? I always see ink caps growing on them in the fall, so I'm just hoping this will work. If I can grow mushies on the manure, would they be safe to eat? Thanks

i would think so, i've never tried it but i don't see why not. I just took a trip to the horse farm the other day and saw some shroomies growing on the horse piles. While digging through the waste i didn't see any mold or anything, i did find some dried out fungus and stuff though. From my understanding horse manure has a kind of bacteria that protects it from contaminants to a certain extent. And seeing as how its just a big pile of shit i'll bet it is relatively sanitary according to mycological standards. I'm interested to hear what some of the professionals think though.

yeah it will work, there are better ways to go about it though like just use the cakes and spawn like you would for indoors in a plant pot/rubbermaid whatever let it colonize, case it then fruit it all outside. alternativly you could just mix in a few cakes with the poop and cover with a black trash bag and let it colonize (bag holds humidity and keeps out light) then remove the bag in a week or so and let it fruit.

Thanks for your help, just one more question. How will the pH of the horse urine affect the growth of the mushrooms? Horse piss smells a lot like ammonia, will this hinder the growth or help it? thanks

do not throw your cake in a fresh pile of shit, you have to pasturizate it first. or dip a hole and drop the cakes in the hole fill the hole with dirt and put a couple scoops of shit on top and spray down the shit so the shit water can get to the cakes. look up what other people have done you'll get your own ideas.
the best thing about it u live or a farm so the grow "NATURAL" there so if anyone finds a patch of mushrooms they can't point it at u.

It does need to be leached. If it has dried out outside and is not still fresh it should be fine. There is no need to pasteurize poop if it is growing outside IMO.

Out of curiousity, when poo needs to be leached why is it recommended to just leave it in water for 24 hours? Why not just a few hours, or is the water being changed during this 24 hour period. If it will be pasturized.. wouldn't it be leached during this stage anyway or does it require at least one 'leaching' before the pasturization process?

there is alot of urine in fresh manure..yes, you change the water a couple of times....its like a rinse you could say...but just get the dried aged stuff if you can.

Ok, that makes a little more sense.
... a couple as in two?... or a couple as in as many times as you can? Could I just put it in water for say 2 hours, 3 or 4 times?

Or why not just hose it down for 15 minutes? I feel like I'm asking dumb questions.

just get a bucket....put your dung in the pillow case..add hot water to your bucket...submerge your dung...let it sit over night...the next morning...change the water, and go about your day...when you get home that night...change the water agian...and let it sit while you go get your big pot ready for pasteurizing..when your ready..drain water and move to your pot of hot water...let it sit at 175 for an hour and a half.

the poop has to be composted first. otherwise gases from composting manure will hinder mush growth. and more importantly the incredible heat a pile of shit puts off will kill the mycelium. try sticking your hand in the middle of a pile once and youll see its a bit warm.

however the large scale composting of crap pastuerizes it at the same time.

When you put the poo in the oven, do you wet it first(field capacity)and then heat it to 170-180' for 1-1 1/2 hours correct?
