Help! Mutant mushrooms
    #23981519 - 01/04/17 01:52 PM (7 years, 26 days ago)

SWIM is a newbie to growing mushrooms. Current set up is a 2 tier growhouse neglect-tek consisting of 2 fans, an intake and out-take, on timers 4 minutes every 4 hours. Humidification consists of passive, by perlite in trays, and active, through an ultrasonic humidifier piped into the chamber which runs for 4 minutes after every fan cycle, and an additional top up run at 3 minutes, equally spaced between fan cycles. Humidity consistently lies above 97%, apart from towards the end of a fan cycle where it drops to 80-85ish, however is quickly topped back up again from the aforementioned humidifier cycle. Light is provided on a 12/12 basis using a 20watt, 6500K floodlight.

Currently there are 8 PF style cakes, colonised and birthed with no contams, dunked before first flush. 6 B+ which are now on their second flush (first flush yielded 26g cracker dry, perfectly formed little babies), and 2 GT which are on their first flush, having started pinning about 4-5 days ago. One GT cake is beginning to fruit, however SWIM noticed that a few of the larger fruits are horrifically deformed (pics 1 & 2, from top of cake and bottom) and can't work out why. In addition, where the B+ cakes originally pinned and fruited from the bottom on the first flush, some are now pinning from the top - not a worry obviously, but the thing that worries SWIM is that the fruits are deformed on a couple of these too. Some are growing without veils and the caps are inverting from an early age (pics 3 and 4, from front and side of mutated cake). Another thing slightly concerning SWIM is that the second flush on the B+ cakes doesn't seem to be pinning anywhere near as much, and reckons they will be surprised if the second flush yields even a 1/4 of the first flush.

Can anyone explain why this is happening to the sacred babies and whether not SWIM has a right to be concerned and if there is anything they can do to fix it? Should these mutants be picked early on to allow the cake to focus on supporting sexy looking mushrooms?

When you say water damage what do you mean? The humidity is too high in the fruiting chamber?

Is the rosecomb likely to spread to the rest of the cake or just whatever side of it apparently came into contact with the chemicals that cause rosecomb?

Thanks for your feedback.

like there was standing ater on the cap at one point, rosecomb is a genetic mutation n won't spread

Looks gnarly dawg, nice shrooms. I've yet to get a mutant, but I'd love to.
