Not bad for a first flowhood

Finally decided to build one and holy moly am I glad that I made that choice. To anyone out there that is on the fence, not knowing whether to undertake the project of building a hood: Build one because it is worth the time and the money you will put into it. I'm really not that good with carpentry and I was still able to make it. This one came out a little bit huge. The next one I will place my blower within the plenum of the flowhood. Thanks to all the people who wrote a flowhood tek!

Hoods rule, but don't try to use them to clean up a dirty plate sab's still rule for that.

wtfcrazymofo,
I'm curious why SAB would be a better choice for cleaning up a contam'd plate?

My guess would be because a contaminated plate has mold spores and a flow hood would blow the spores all over the place.

filter is 24" x 24" x 5 7/8"mcMaster carr blower is VTX1000 at the moment it makes my lighter flicker too much and almost blows it out. I'm thinking it seems easier to thicken the pre-filter to reduce intake instead of setting up a rheostat to slow down the fan.

Flow hoods work for contaminated plates too. "Clean goes upstream".

Lol no never open a contaminated plate in a flowhood path. It blows contaminants across the dish and over the clean mycelium you would be trying to isolate and save

I transfer from contaminated plates in a flowhood stream and have clean plates. It does work well.

The whole points of flow hood is to clean up plates. RR warns against it because it spreads spores in your work area. And blows them on you

That's a much better idea. You have no idea what contamination is on your plates it could be harmless. Cause you a small allergic reaction or maybe a big one. Or it could be a pathogen

Probably best just to throw out any plates that are spreading spores, if the option exists which it usually does.... as for getting sick or allergic reactions, I guess it could happen, but seems unlikely if using a quality mask and some Tyvek or equivelent over your body. I'd be more worried about smelling jars...Fuck that.
