Cans are actually a better option than bottles in a lot of instances. They preserve flavors better especially hops. They don't break and fuck someone's day up. Also way more recyclable. A lot of breweries are already making a switch to cans as we speak.

Bummer. I notice a considerable difference in taste between cans and bottles. Even when poured out, canned beer tastes pretty metallic to me.

Beer starts to lose its flavor after 6 months and within a year you'll notice floaties in it. Actually cans are less recyclable and the reason breweries and pop companies are making the switch is not because of recycling but because the canning process allows for more automation, efficiency and far less jobs.

All beer goes bad after a while. Stuff doesn't last forever like liquor. Even wine can only be aged for so long before the aging process is detrimental to taste.
I also prefer the taste of bottled beer over canned beer. The metallic taste is real. I do like tallboys though, there are a few really good beers that only come in tall cans that I have never seen in bottles.

I've drank bottle conditioned stouts and barleywines well over three years old and they only get better most of the time. Cans are really good at preserving the hop profile of ipas because light can destroy the alpha acids from the hops. Yeah if I'm gonna age a beer I'd prefer it in a bottle but I'm gonna keep it in complete darkness until I'm ready to drink it.
Cans are cheaper than bottles but job wise cans don't cut out jobs. Source: My roommate works at a fairly large brewery that I've had the pleasure of watching grow from a lil brewpub.

I've never enjoyed IPAs or anything hoppy to begin with; definitely a stout and brown ale fan myself. It makes sense now that I see significantly more IPAs in cans, though.

yeah a lot of ipa's are in cans now. but i'm glad lagunitas hasn't made the switch. bottled beer tastes way better than canned beer, imo.
although i've noticed certain canned beer, you can taste the metal more.

Cans have better seals than bottles as miniscule amounts of air can seep into the cap of the bottle.. and having worked in the industry I can tell you that bottling requires more jobs than canning. Requires less equipment and worker's and also has way higher efficiencies.
Edit I'm talking about industrial breweries not some craft brewery like your friends

Lagunitas makes a 12pack in cans. It's called the "12th of Never". So I'm sitting next to my buddy and as far as it goes canning and bottling cost both the same and require the same amount of employees to run. Cans are better for storage, weight, and shipping. Bottles are only nessesary for bottle conditioning and spiffy one offs.

beer is 100% perishable and cans are only better then glass in the fact that they don't allow light pollution, which dark glass does anyways. most beers have a best by date, you can notice a major taste change after they sit or get hot and cold multiple times. most distributors expect you to keep the product refrigerated.

In Canada bottles are used so it requires extra equipment and worker's to process. But in general with everything factored in bottles would provide more jobs direct and indirectly. Lines run at a slower rate(more production time required) less fit on a truck( more loads required) etc etc

Their really aren't many differences as far as production goes between bottle and canning lines. The bottles get sanitized, filled and capped. Then labeled and packaged either by machine or human. Same goes with canning. They get sanitized, filled, and a top fitted in place. Then packaged the same way. Not much difference....

Whatever I'm not going to argue with some guy online. There are actually big differences. Your friend obviously works at some hole in the wall craft brewery that has limited production and no one's even heard of. I'm working with industrial mega breweries. Think Budweiser, Miller etc I work at a company on par with them as in terms of scale.
