Hops
    #23976101 - 01/02/17 12:59 PM (7 years, 28 days ago)

I have been wanting to grow Hops for a few years now, but there is a slim window here in the UK with getting hold of rhizomes, I have got my hands on two rhizomes, cascade and Chinook.

I have a hydroponic setup that I grow tomatoes in my conservatory and so i just added two extra units to it and put the rhizomes in them, these went in just after Christmas and last Wednesday the plants have broken through the surface.

These are being growing in Autopot XL units and in a 60/40 coco and clay pebble mix.

Hydro hops?

Never heard of someone doing that.  How do you induce flowering for hops indoors?

I guess for me its not completely hydro as theres a substrate. but I'm looking to move these outside once they are bit bigger and the frosts have passed.

look on youtube and theres someone growing hops in hydro but without  any substrate.

growing hops indoor is not really easy as the vines get quite big

good for you op, I should be gettin some rhizomes too but my production is zero so I need to get back at beer first

Thanks, they will get moved outside when the weather is considerably warmer than the frost every night that we are currently getting here.

I have heard that commercial growers remove all the original growth later on in the year as this apparently causes more flower formation

There are hop gardens near here and they let them grow about four or five metres tall. They choose three main leaders and cut down the rest. Sometimes they burn them off. The soft tips of the discarded shoots you can eat. You cook them like asparagus

Hops can grow to something like 20'+.  It's still considered hydro even with a Coco/hydroton mix.  It's a soiless hydro set up because they're not in dirt.
