- 1968: The Stewart Lyman LSD lab is busted
Quote:
Find LSD Lab Being Operated by Biochemist
BY ROBERT WIEDRICR A man described as a major supplier of LSD in the Old Town area was bared last night as a $22,000- a- year technical director for a chemical corporation. Stewart Lyman, 42, was arrested by Chicago police and federal agents as be "cooked" a batch of the synthetic drug in his apartment at 2463 N. Albany ay. Lyman, who has a master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Minnesota, was identified by Detectives Donald Dura and Richard McKelvey, of the narcotics detail, as the technical director of the Wright Chemical corporation, 1319 Wabansia ay. He has worked for the firm for eight months, police said.
Break Down Door
Lyman was arrested after the detectives and agents of the federal bureau of drug abuse control broke down the front door of his apartment to find Lyman producing a large quantity of LSD. "The scene was almost unbelievable," said Detective Dura. "Lyman was producing a batch Of the drug thru a maze of glass and rubber tubing, connecting various cauldrons cooking on hot plates." The four-room apartment was bare of furniture except for one bed and the equipment needed to produce the drug. "The apartment was filled with the strong stench of the acids used in the manufacture of LSD," Dura said. "Various glass containers were bubbling and the LSD liquid was drip-ping from pipes into other containers." Crowded with Supplies The room was crowded with barrels containing supplies of glass vials as well as glass and rubber tubing. Also seized were gallons of the acids and other - chemicals used in the manufacture of LSD as well as a quantity of the drug itself.
Police said that the secret laboratory had functioned for r some months behind drawn curtains and closed windows that prevented the acrid fumes from permeating the building. L- The raid on the laboratory resulted from a lengthy investigation by the federal agents ▪ and city narcotics detectives who had detected the operations — of several "pushers" who were • selling large quantities of the drug in the Old Town area.
Arrested 15 Times
Police said Lyman had been s arrested 15 times on various charges ranging from the possession of illicit drugs, to assault, vagrancy, and passing bad checks. In December. 1966, he was ▪ placed on probation for a year for the possession of amphetamines. Lyman told detectives that he previously worked as a chemist for six years for another Chicago firm.

- 1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono's album Two Virgins is seized as pornography
Quote:
January 2, 1969: A shipment of John and Yoko‘s Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins is seized by New Jersey authorities, who deem its cover “pornographic“ After an all-night session of avant-garde jamming in 1968, John Lennon and Yoko Ono decided to release the recordings under the name Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins, the title relating to their feelings of innocence in the world around them and also the consummation of their relationship after that evening. However, New Jersey authorities had a different response to the album art: they found it pornographic.
Two Virgins‘ cover art famously featured a full-length nude photograph of the couple. Shortly after its release, police seized 30,000 copies of the record at Newark Airport in New Jersey, preventing their sale. Following this, the couple’s disc of discordant sound and white noise was sold with a brown paper sleeve obscuring the stark cover, which did not help the disc’s general reception. Ironically, some listeners found the raucous melee an artistically immature expression.

In 1968–1970 the Paris and Orleans labs of Ron Stark and Tord Svenson purportedly produced several kilograms of LSD and from 1971–1972 their Belgian laboratory reportedly produced another several kilos, all distributed via the Brotherhood of Eternal Love as "Orange Sunshine." Stark eventually was arrested in Italy in 1975, where he served four years. He was arrested and deported in 1983 from Holland to the US where he faced conspiracy charges, in US v Sand and Scully et al. in San Francisco, but the charges were eventually dropped in 1983. He died in San Francisco in 1984 from a heart attack.
