I'm sorry but Jackson is so not modern name dood.

But idk older names are pretty ratchet too.

As someone with such a common name I all for weird names.

I'm currently really liked Casimir for a boy and Elspeth for a girl.

Ages ago, I worked at a resort that was part of some kind of work exchange program.  The long & short of it is that the resort basically ended up importing like 25 Jamaicans that they fundamentally treated as slave labor for the summer.  They had really unusual names, but not like typical African American names.  The 3 I worked with & grew to be friends with were named Elroy, Garfield, and Bastion.  They had tiny feet.  I took them shopping once & they were all checking out women's shoes.  I miss those guys though.

My son is named Roland, which is an old family name.  It's a good name because it's not very common, but also not unheard of.  Thats how my name works too.  My family has like 10 first names that we all just recycle.  It never gets confusing because we never reuse a name while someone is alive.  I don't have many living relatives.

I agree with the OP that kids' names are getting out of hand.  I've heard some real stupid ones recently.  A guy I know just named his son Asher.  White people need to stop naming their kids after places- Austin, Dakota, Madison, etc.

Roland is cool, I lived with a roland, he went by "rolley" like a rolled cigarette name.

Asher is not a strange wonky name imo

ahaha I have a friend named Asher. I don't think that's a bad name really?
But yeah some of the names are out of control. It's partially due to all the popular TV shit I think, you KNOW tons of people this year named their kids Daenerys, Bran, Arya, Tyrion, HODOR and shit..
I think we picked a relatively safe name for our son. It's not common by any means but it's also not weird.

Aiden is an old name.  It has irish Catholic roots i believe.

I had a friend growing up named dirk, i always thought that name was better left in fiction.

Both my first and middle name are biblical.

Yeah, your son's name is cool like that.  I never heard Asher before and just assumed it was one of those GoT names, or some kind of anime reference.

The father of this Asher is named Franklin Delano [surname].  I wonder if "Donald" has gotten more or less popular this past year.

I haven't heard Asher in any pop fiction that I can think of really.. other than the Giver.. it's one of those old school bible names I think, but not common.
Here people just name their kids whatever the fuck they want, for better or for worse. I'm sure there will be a simultaneous upsurge and downsurge of Donalds.

I would be picking out of names from cultures my bloodline associates with, to clarify that means non-Abrahamic names.

Im part Juden, but its a small fraction, and I find the way Europeans cling to all things Jew to be disturbing.

Not that I have a particular problem with Jews, but its weird, like a Mexican naming their kid Abdullah Yoshimito

I've always been oddly fond of the name Isaac.

Met one of these for the first time fairly recently. It was actually remarkably appropriate. He just seemed like an Elroy.

I met the electronic artist Kalya Scintilla once and found out his first name was fucking Yaygon of all things, which stands out as among the worst names I've yet to encounter in person.

Indeed, it often seems to me that of all the good things in the world, the only ones humanity can claim for itself are stories and music; the rest, mercy, beauty, sleep, clean water and hot food (as the Ascian would have said) are all the work of the Increate. Thus, stories are small things indeed in the scheme of the universe, but it is hard not to love best what is our own—hard for me, at least."

Modest,  I have two girls and a boy.  It ain't easy with my girls.  My son is a little more laid back. Could be my specific situation but in my opinion boys are easier to raise

I prefer modern sounding names. I really like the names Lucien, Storm, Blaze, Blade, Karma, Enzo, Aaliyah. It's so much more interesting than names like Matthew or John or Jessica or Ashley or whatever. Literally everybody has those names.

Where I draw the line is just totally random words for names. Celebrities naming their kids Apple or North or West. It doesn't even sound cool to say, it's just weird.

Quote:

White people need to stop naming their kids after places- Austin, Dakota, Madison, etc.

I actually like the name Austin, but only on girls. I like it when girls have boy names.

My girl and I are coming up with names for our future kids and she keeps throwing out all these lame modern ones lol.

I couldn't agree more it's ridiculous
My best friend just had a kid and he wanted to name him Robert after someone in his life that's important, simple and manly name. Then him and his wife got sepperated because she was being awful to him for years before that and he flipped out and saw someone else briefly. Long story short she named the kid "Tate" because she saw some movie named big man Tate or something. I'm this kids uncle and I hate his name. I don't think she even likes it much ,it was more to piss off my bro. Which is sad and stupid because it only really affects Tate. The rest of the names she picked were worse those like " Brayeah" "Grey" "Aston" . My bro and his wife are now back together too so he could've been named Robert if my bro wasn't an idiot and made a mistake.

My sisters kids names are just as stupid, including (Alister,Alorah,Mildred(Milly)) for the life of me I can't understand why women have such bad taste in names.

I thought that was the most badass sounding name I've ever heard in my life. Dude sounds like he could be a villain in Blade Runner or something.

I've known a lot of terribly named people. The worst was Quintarrius. I also once knew twins name Bashan (bay-shawn) and Jaquan (jay-kwan). It's like new parents just wanna piss everyone off with their kids' names.

One time an ex thought I got her pregnant. We made a deal that if it was a boy, she got to name it, and I got to name a girl. I was gonna go with Lilith. I don't remember what her choice was, but I remember I thought it sucked. Bentley, or Brantley or Brayden or some terrible thing like that.

@Crystal G: Lucien Blue Remington is a fuckin badass name.

Holy shit, guys! I just looked that ex up on facebook, and she's married now and has a daughter who she calls Lilly. The kid's full name isn't posted anywhere, but I can't help but wonder if she went with the name I chose 6 years prior to her daughter's birth.

Edit: sorry for the double post

My friend's fat hobgoblin got pregnant and named their son Blake (he got no choice in the matter. I said give him a real name that no one will take the piss out of, like Steve, Dave, Gary, Bob)

I asked the fucking fat cunt if it was because of the poet William Blake, she, who's mother is professor of English literature in one of the prestigious oxbridge colleges, might have now and then namedropped Blake as being a pretty cool guy and worth naming your son William after.

No, it's named after this shitty fucking american sitcom that's not even funny https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Workaholics after a guy who's hair is a fucking embarrassment. Maybe she just really dislikes him and wants him to be bullied when he grows up.

I'd so change my name if I was that guy

My parents gave me a unisex name which I sometimes shorten to Lee as it seems to be easier for people to hear over the phone.

I quite like the name Leeson, as in, son of Lee.

So many people these days give their kids such cringey names. I think it's a selfish act, to give your kid a dumb ultra unique name that they'll get made fun of and resent you for. I actually met some kid named "Storm" in a suburban setting, I couldn't believe it was his real name. Also met some dude named "Blaze", I was just like no fuckin way your name is "Blaze".

A fancy unheard of name for a regular American is never impressive. Some of my highschool friends who have kids now, they all named their kids weird shit and it's so cringey. Some of the boy names sound very feminine.

I think all people should be named based on their ethnic or nationality. Americans should have American names, like Asians should have Asian names.

As above, Blake is a pretty normal name in America

Blake isn't a name that'll get someone bullied. If anything It'll make him more likely to become associated with the children of people who like Workaholics, which at this time is mostly stoners born in the 1990s. It may seem silly to you but you could apply evolutionary psychology to her reasoning. He will now grow up and be more accepted in a world of people who's generation was spawned by people similar to his mother, and she therefore perpetuates the type of culture she enjoys and makes the future more like she would want it to be. It could even help him find a more suitable mate as people tend to gravitate more towards people in their own caste, and his name will speed up the process of mate selection, because the first thing a person will know about him is the fact that his family comes from the kind of culture where "Blake" is the kind of name they would choose.

I think it should fit where you reside so people don't get confused and frazzled by your name.

Personally I had to Americanize my name cause I was born and raised in Scandinavia (for the first half of my life) and my name is very Swedish, but now living in America I go by an abreviated version of my middle name as to not confuse and weird people the fuck out, as it's pronounced and spelled in a different alphabet.

Yeah its fucked up dude, those parents giving their kids feminine names should be punished and the kid given the choice to change their name.

And hopefully if Crystal G has kids she will come to her senses, cause no kid with any of those names will grow up feeling normal

God, I've heard some stupid fucking names in the last five years or so. One that sticks out to me is one of my cousin's: a little girl named "Person." Makes me wanna lick her mom in the taint.

Edit: Kick, obvs.   That'll teach me to not skip proofreading when I post.

Blake is a pretty normal name where I'm from (USA).  It's not overly common, but I think most people have known someone named Blake.  It's even my middle name, given to me because it's a family name (see my first post in this thread for more on that subject).  Given your otherwise unnecessary description of her, it sounds to me like you're not at all fond of your friend's son's mother, and you would be critical of any name she gave a child.

And hopefully if Crystal G has kids she will come to her senses, cause no kid with any of those names will grow up feeling normal

Let me guess, you probably have a basic name like Paul or Ryan or Scott, and you therefore have no imagination for names.

"Kids should be named whatever ethnicity they are," who named you the identity police?

No, my opinion is based on personal experience growing up, look at my quote from pages behind. When I first moved to the US I was still going by my original name and it was fucking up all my teachers and class mates so I had to normalize.

Nuentoter, Felix is a dope name imo

So what you're saying is that you conformed instead of choosing to tough it out, mmkay. :yesnod:

I have a unique name, I even have one of those American Gladiator names, my name gave me character and it's one of those things you appreciate once you're older. On my resume people who are interviewing me always comment how much they love my name.

Kids possibly being bullied is no reason to not give them a unique name, you could still name your kid Kate or Joseph and they could still end up being picked on for having curly hair or being too tall or being too smart.

As long as you aren't naming them Dung or Asshole or something that's obviously crude, there's nothing wrong with it.

PS I love the name Storm, though it's usually a girl's name, not a boy's name.

Well having a name from a different language that Americans are unable to pronounce is different from having the name of a futuristic 3D pixar cartoon character.

Morpheus would also be a fuckin corny name

Hey all! New to the site, still figuring out how to use the features, and this is one of the first threads that caught my eye. I think that names should be unique and timeless. Not new age to the extreme nor generic so that a child would have to be referred to as Joe H or Joe B etc.

They could of called her Ann...and taught her to spell it dkghro.

This always cracked me up:

“Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116” (pronounced Albin)

"Parents Elisabeth Hallin and Lasse Diding submitted the 43-character name in May 1996, claiming that it was “a pregnant, expressionistic development that we see as an artistic creation.”

The parents suggested the name be understood in the spirit of’pataphysics, but the court rejected."

One of my best friends is named Storm. He is an awesome person and never resented his name. And most people in school and life have complimented him for having an awesome name.

Most of you are all over thinking the effect new age names have. I think a majority of people enjoy interesting and unique names. As long as it isn't too stupid. (like my white cousin who named one of her son's Zaquain)

Personally I really like the name Cerulean for a boy or girl. Eugene is a family name I'd like to use it I have a boy. Skyley and Rylai are names id like to use for girls.

Shadow would have to be the middle name if you named your kid Storm.

I like the name Skyler for girls. And yes, Storm is indeed a badass name.

I heard a young father at a bus stop once call his child "Skyler" and thought, why the fuck would you name your daughter after a character from a tv drama about crystal meth!
Why not be done with it, go the whole hog and call her that..."hold daddies hand, Crystal-meth and yo, keep up Hasheeesh"...The mind fucking boggles. :nonono:

As for Storm, I'd save that as a middle name, the first being Either.

I wouldn't give a child a name that would cause it to be asked "how'd you spell that" for the rest of its life.

Notice my location? UK. Skyler has never been a name over here.

The only place the father I spoke of would have come across it as a name would have been by watching breaking bad. A tv programme about a crystal meth manufacturer who's wifes name was...Skyler.

If you didn't watch the drama "breaking bad" you wouldn't get that, but the child will go through life branded with that name.

Skyler is a name in the UK. It's just not a very popular one. It looks like it was the most popular around the year 2000.

In a few years nobody will even be watching Breaking Bad anymore, so I doubt it will go through life being known as the "crystal meth lady."

I've got to the age of being a grey beard and never heard that name used before.

The name "Styler" will be forever be associated with that programme, to people of a certain generation, if someone was cunt enough to name their child that.

That's a very feminine name, just know that he will probably get bullied at school for that, and it'll be your fault.

Nice name, but unfortunately yes, it does sound quite feminine. It's one letter off from Cassie, short for Cassandra.

Isn't Cassiel one of the Great guardians of one of the levels of palaces? Been a while.

Kids get bullied based on whether they're cool or not. You could give them a basic, average name and they'll still find a way to make fun of it. "Matt the rat," "Joe blow," and Richard AKA Dick is pretty self-explanatory.

While you're at it, why don't you tell your kid to quit being so smart, since apparently smart kids get bullied more often. It's asinine to live your life in fear of this.

I guess you're right

But still, the kid might be uncool and his feminine name will just add to his misery. It will feel like a curse that he's stuck with and  might want to kill himself. You see,, it's risky naming your boy something feminine this day in age. If he had a msculine name and he was still uncool and bullied, well at least  he's not being bullied for his name; something that he can't change

Also, childhood suicide is a thing that happens

A name is something that you can change. I have not only legally changed my name, I've gone by many different aliases and nicknames throughout my lifetime. I have a Japanese name, I have a name I only use among close friends, another name I only use among my druggo friends, I have a name I only use at work, and I have my legal name. You are not as bound to your name as you think you are.

If a kid really hates their name that much, then they can simply start going by a different name or you can have it changed to something else. Easy. Why on earth would it even have to get to the point of suicide?

I guarantee you if they are getting bullied to the point of suicide, it has nothing to do with their name, that's for sure.

I have one name and no nicknames that have stuck.
I consider my name a massive driving factor in my development as its what I refer to myself as and what other people refer to me as.

That said If I had a name I didnt like id come up with an alternate.

No one knows forsure why those kids mysteriously kill themselves, but there's a bunch of notable cases were the evidence pointed towards in school bullying.

If you want to ensure high chances that your kid will be a badass at life then give him a good name that isn't feminine or goofy. Your name affects your personality. Want to increase the chances of your kid being feminine or picked on? Give him a goofy or feminine name. This is the bottom line. I'd never name my kid something that doesn't pertain to who they actually are (gender and ethnicity)

Yeah, many times the bullying has to do with the kid's sex lives or promiscuity or homosexuality or something. When a case of bullying is severe enough to get to the point of suicide it typically is for reasons far beyond anything to do with a kid's name.

I want to see a couple of super white people name their kid something black.

Like "hello I am Steve and this is Lisa, have you seen our little angel Daquan and his brother Jamal, the joy of our lives"

I like some black names. Like Aaliyah, or Shante (pronounced Shantay). Those are pretty names for girls.

Aaliyah is Hebrew / Arabic
Shante sounds Indian or French

Shante is French, but it's still also a popular name among urban blacks. Same with Aaliyah. Ezekiel is another Hebrew name that I like and it's also popular among black people.

Sometimes when he's not listening I'll call him by his full name, Ezekiel but pronounce in more like    eh-zeh-kie-el  makes me feel hebrew or amish or some shit.

I thought it'd be good to bring back names like Balthazar.... Couldn't get her on board though..... Almost had approval for Archibald, as we'd call him Archie, just like her grandpa.... But didn't go through.... We chose some good names still though, classics.

there's nothing in a name when it comes to a persons name, unless you wish to invoke the personhood of the particular name's recipient.

so Octavius, therefore, is a cool name.

Nah, Akira makes perfect sense. A name only implies what everyone else projects into it. If Shaniqua is considered a black girls name, that is only because of the person hearing the name has some preconceived idea of what kind of person that name should belong to. In reality its just a fucking name. Its only for personal aesthetics or reverence of some sort.

Elroy

So somebody just reopened this 3 year old thread, and I gotta say I LOL when you said they all had tiny feet.

Also the person who reopened this 3 year old thread suggested we would have an infusion of Corona names. That's interesting because the last two weeks when I'm at work (at Amazon, where we have cannisters of hand sanitizer set up every ten feet) I can't stop thinking about Jackson Browne. On his classic 1976 album, The Pretender, there is a song called Linda Paloma. That song pretty much sucks, but there is this line where he more or less tries to rhythm Linda Paloma with The Sun's Bright Corona, so it's stuck in my head. At least that reminded me of the good songs on the album, The Fuse, Here Comes Those Tears Again, and The Pretender. So yeah, Jackson is not a new name.

As far as current events suggesting names for kids. I never wanted or had kids, but Dylan's album Desire, also 1976, had a song called Isis. I love that name, and I thought some day I would get a little black cat and name it Isis. That name got ruined good.

Roland is a cool name. Mostly beacuse of the Dark Tower series

I know a kid called Storm. He just isnt badass enough for that name

You basically need to be raised a pirate or something to earn a name like that imo

'Atreyu' is an American metal core band with melodic death metal and hardcore influences from Orange County, California. Contrary to popular belief, the band did not intentionally name itself after Atreyu, a character from Michael Ende's novel, The Never-ending Story. Rather, the name was suggested to them by a friend of the band.“

Either way, cool name. His girlfriend and her girlfriend both really like it. That’s all that matters lol
