Washing coir to remove salt/mono tub small fruit questions
    #23975701 - 01/02/17 10:53 AM (7 years, 28 days ago)

Hey guys. One thing I know about about coconut coir is that it has a very high salt content. In canna grows, we must wash the crap out of our coir prior to using it. (Coir and perlite mixed 50/50 is killer for canna)

One thing that struck me off in the CVG prep, is that we just add the correct amount of water and call it good. Obviously, this salt content doesn't stop the sub from working, but would it perform better without it?

I was thinking of making CVG but washing the coir and then squeezing the water out of it before mixing into the sub. Any thoughts? I tried it once, but got tric super early. I believe it was my spawns fault, not the sub.

Also, my first flush on my first mono had TINY fruits, and now that it's almost done, they are huge. I've read that too much water can make small fruits? Any info or help on this would be appreciated. Maybe just move from 4.5 qts water down to 4? This didn't make sense to me, i thought these little fuckers like water!

You do not need to wash coir for mushroom cultivation. It might be different for cannabis but I never heard about it

A wrong water content can lead to small fruits. If the water content is too high the 'mycelium network' has a hard time to colonize the substrate and absorb the water.

The reason for your small fruits might be others than the water content. Genetics or light for example.

I wouldn't worry about the salt content. Just go out and get a standard sized eco earth brick of coir and follow the bucket tek to a T.
And actually, I've had more success using about 5 quarts of boiling water to expand the brick. It gets to perfect field capacity every time

And like enlightenment said, the reason for your smallish fruits might very well be poor genetics or unfavorable conditions.

Look into working with agar and get into some cloning to increase your chances of having consistently strong flushes

Thanks guys.

Of course I know we don't NEED to wash it, but I've heard of high salt content being bad for shroomies. Guess I'll just have to test it myself.

The fruit size increased quite a bit with each flush. The last one I picked was 1 gram dry. If it was due to Ms, wouldn't I have had varying sizes as opposed to an entire tub full of 1 inch tall shrooms with no veil intact. They get plenty of light, although I did get to see what lack of light does by observing a few of the pins from The Dark Side of the Tub.

I do use agar, but I'm having trouble with potency. 7grams dry gives me a mild trip. Is there anyway to get ahold of a culture of something that is known to be potent? A trade forum or something?

I'd really like to have a base line of what strong fruits are like so I can guage my potency correctly.

I only grow for myself and 2 or 3 friends, and I just started 3 monotubs. Even if they're weak, I should have enough to make it work! We haven't even been able to keep up with this one tub!
