AA Sterilizers and electric stovetops?
    #23975578 - 01/02/17 10:13 AM (7 years, 28 days ago)

Hey all!

So I moved into a new apartment and I haven't done any culture work here. I went to sterilize some agar when I realized it's not a gas burner, its a smaller oven with electric coil type ranges on top. No gas in my apartment it's all electric.

It also doesn't seem too sturdy, the weight of an AA seems a little much.

For today I'm gunna grab the coil style hot plate from my old house and give it a go on that- at least if I damage it its no biggie it was only 40$.

Any tips from folks whos ovens have electric coils?

Thanks!

-Mush

I've used some cheaper electric stoves and they all have worked fine (assuming they aren't glass top). The shoddiest one I used would dent inwards between all 4 burners when I had a full AA921 on it, but once I removed it it would *pop* back out on it's own. What brand is it? Best of luck!

I've used my 921 on a few different electric coil ranges. Never had any issues, myself.

Haha I bet it could handle the Presto. I own a Presto 23 but I have to buy new gaskets for it.

I'm gunna try this before I try the electric stove again.

Ive boiled big pots of water on it before  , its sturdier than the stovetop I have.

I run two presto 18 quarts at once with 4 bags in them. it works fine on the electric stove use.

Tomorrow Im going to do a little trial run with my AA 930 on the electric stove. gonna put in 4 bags, totaling a little more than 8 quarts of grain. I'll let ya know how it went.

Those Salton burners cycle every 4-8 minutes. Works for a Presto, but it takes an hour to vent, 45 minutes up to pressure etc...

Not sure of the brand but I used an electric range for quite a while with a 925 before just recently picking up a LP burner. I've even used the small element on the range, just took longer to get to temp.

What do you mean by cycle? I'm just trying it now, it started venting and then shut itself off

The hotplate wasnt powerful enough.

I got it up on my stove and it seems to be doing fine this time, I think I just had to balance it better

Hopefully it works

Edit: Guess this post was for nothing. Got it sorted out, the coils on my stove were just wobbly I only had to balance the Sterilizer out.

The electric top works better than my gas burner actually. Heats up faster, and it holds at pressure much better than the gas top which was finnicky

I use an electric stove and the only issue I ever have is having to
balance my pc using a jar lid under the edge. It gets so heavy it makes
the coil tilt but a metal band under the edge solves it no problem.

Blindingleaf runs his 941 on a portable single electric coil like you have pictured up there, Mushpunx.

Obviously gas would be better, but what you have should work. When I first started growing my house had an electric stove top like your apartment and I was able to work with it

I also run a 941 on an electric coil hot-plate.

If you're thinking of hot-plates I recommend this one.

It is expensive

Used my AA 930 on a electric range today. Worked like a charm. Probably going to buy a restaurant grade range for it and use small peices of copper pipe to shim it.

I can't believe I went this long without one!! Best investment ever!

Yes that was what my original problem was, the coil tilting. I managed to get it balanced.

The jar band is a great Idea I was racking my brain trying to think of something to use!

Ya I just put it under the tilting edge of my pc and it balances it out
perfectly. I dedicated one band for this job because the band gets pretty
hot and it patinas and slightly blackens over time due to the heat.

I used this for a long time.  takes forever to get a 941 up and going, but a presto is fast.  its pricey but powerful.  use an appropriate extension cord for the load because it can burn.

I got one of these though and never went back.  it moonlights as a toaster too, go figure

pro tip for the future- don't move to places with electric stoves.  they suck even for cooking and u can't light a cigarette on them
