My 1st Try Of Oyster Mushroom Cultivation

Dear Shroomery Members ;
First of all ; I would like to thank you all for sharing your experiences about mushroom cultivation & I'm definetely sure that all those information are very beneficial for both amateur & professional mushroom cultivators.

I start growing oyster mushroom under my house which is seperate (50m2/each).A few years ago I purchased compost (10 tons) from our relative but because of wrong pasteurization method ; all bags  turned into green molds and I had to take all bags outside at 1 night :frown:

After that I decided to to do it myself by getting information from internet and I found your website.I would like to share my experiences with other members so maybe I may help to the others.

I am using wheat straw supplemented by wheat bran by a ratio 0f %5.I mix everything in dry form and put them into the bags.

My pasteurization method is cold pasteurization with hydrated lime.I fill 200 Lt water than I add hydrated lime into the water until it reaches pH 12.0.I use pH measure sticks because it is cheaper then other measurement equipments.I have totally 10 drums.Then I put the bag into the water and wait 16 hours.When the time is over ; I take bags out and spread it over the over which is sterilized before and let the straw squeeze at least 4 hours but during this time I put a plastic sheet on the straw to keep mouisture.I did not put it directly to the sunlight otherwise it becomes dry.I meausure the pH again and it becomes around 6-7 which is enough for me.Then I add gypsum up to %5 of the total substrate (Gypsum is used to ballance the PH in the substrate) and spawn it in the  polyethylene bags.Each bag is around 6 kg.

I also add %1 sugar powder for 15 bags & cotton seed meal for 15 bags but I don't remember which bags are including what :smile: I forgot to mark it

Firstly I was using air condition to heat my room but in my town ; it is sometimes -10 C so I decided to use stove.During 1 month in the inoculation period I tried to keep heat around 22-23 C because inside of the compost is at least 3-4 C warmer then room temprature.I'm using fogging system to keep humidity of the room around 90% and I do it only once in a day because stove makes the air very dry.

I open the lights 12hr/day , every hour I turned on ventilation system 2 times/per hour during 3 minutes each to get some fresh air and keep the humidity %80-%85 by fogging system.And I got my first oyster mushrooms

But I have mistakes for sure ; and these are what I wanted to share with you.

HOLES OF THE BAG

I punch holes on the bags to exchange gas in the compost.I shouldn't open the holes so often ( 12 holes per bag which are 2cm each) because it starts getting dry and fliers insects go into there and start growing in my compost :mad2: . Next time I will use very very smaller holes.When colonization is fully done ; I will sterilize razor blade and cut the holes that time.By doing this; insects can not go in to my compost.

My other mistake is I did not press the compost very good as it is required.Therefore when there is an air space in the bags , when it see the light pins start growing everywhere and consumes it's vitamins so my mushrooms stays small than I expect.There should not be any space on the top of the bags.

If you see anything wrong ; I'm waiting your feedback.And what I wonder is what if I add molasses to the straw after pasteurization by distrilling (50ml/5lt) does it help to get higher yields or it is just a contamination risk ?
