Watch out for knock-off SSRs on Amazon!
    #23973681 - 01/01/17 05:48 PM (7 years, 29 days ago)

I am in the process of converting my 55 gal drum sterilizer from a propane setup to electric and decided to go with a PID temperature controller and SSR (I need to run some pressure due to higher altitude so there is no constant on option).

Here is my rant - It appears that people are taking SSRs that have lower amperage ratings, changing the labels and selling them on Amazon/eBay as being 40A etc.  Really good way to burn down the house to save a couple of bucks.  The cheap PIDs are shite too - I went to calibrate one using ice water, and when I took the thermocouple out to warm it back up the temperature reading DROPPED.

Figured I would post this to help anyone out that is looking to automate anything as it could save some frustration and possibly a fire.  Spending a few extra bucks on a decent PID and a real SSR appears to be worth it.

Not really sure how to notify them?

It seems this is not a new issue:

I ended up paying a few bucks and going through Omega.

That's so shady!

Is it against the rules to post which seller it was?

I bought 2 cheap chinese rex c100 PIDs on ebay and they are garbage.
Settings don't work properly, I can't change sensor input from termocouple to rtd and now they don't even read temperature anymore.
I also bought 4 40a ssr relays, 1 was broken.

Yep, been going on for a while, ones i got would stick on once turned, even after the signal voltage dropped. Electric brewery sells legit ones. Also if you want good pid's auber makes the best.

Thank you for the recommendations grower.  I ordered an SSR from Omega and another PID but have bookmarked both sites for the future.  Do you use Auber for your humidity controllers also?

Looks like we have all gone through the same frustration with this garbage.  Yeah Roger, the PID I got was a rex c100 knockoff.

Cool, thx.  New PID is inkbird.

You have any trouble with spores and humidity controllers?
