First attempt from beginning to end. any advice?
    #23973466 - 01/01/17 04:26 PM (7 years, 29 days ago)

This is my first attemp at a SGFC using the Tek provided by EvilMushroom666 (great post BTW)
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15223324#15223324

Everything was going text book until 5 days into fruiting. I suspect FAE and/or moisture problems. It also took 28 days to fully colonize including the 1 week wait after full colonization.

Here is a pick of my room.

Here is a pick of the SGFC set up with 5 inch wet perlite base

started to notice pinning on day 5 and everything seemed good. Although it looks like I lost a lot of verm from misting probably.

Then... aborts after aborts.. flash forward 2 weeks from first being placed in fruiting chamber and I got 2 cakes with fruit out of my five.

I was impressed with my good one considering this is my first time and I usually suck at growing things.

However I was hoping to yield quite a bit more and get fruit from all cakes. first flush (2 out of 5 cakes that fruited) I got 5.8 G cracker dry. it was 40-50g wet can't remember exactly.

2nd flush only 1 cake produced any fruit at 5.8 wet and this is where I am at now. I noticed pinning on most of them, but all aborted super small.

So, I was Misting and Fanning 3x day. 5am, 5pm, and 9:30pm. I kept this room at 40-45 & relative humidity with a humidifier using distilled water. before anyone says anything about the humidifier, I live at 10,200 feet and we have 0 humidity like the dessert so I thought it would help to provide relative humidity to the room. It is not aimed or directed to the SGFC by any means. The light is a 6500k CFL 65watt

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016V24F10/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can see in the room picture where it is placed (ceiling).the SGFC was set on the top of that back shelving unit so the bulb was about 3 feet from the top of chamber. 12 hours on/off. I kept the room at 78 degrees. I did notice the blueing on my 3 of my cakes which I think is signs of it drying out. I tried to keep up humidity in the chamber by misting all the perlite floor extremely well after lightly misting cakes. This seemed to help keep up the humidity for the 2+ weeks. So all in all I am not disappointed. I feel lucky I got anything my first go at it. But, my next go around with new cakes I want to maybe try to change up some things. Here are some things I thought of trying...

Using Gypsum in my substrate next time.

Grinding up the verm in a coffee grinder. The verm I bought seems large and chunky compared to other photos I have seen.

Get a better light that is more directed towards the chamber like a 2 foot florescent fixture 1 foot above the chamber

FAE issues - I am not home to fan more then I stated. maybe a fan set on low to be programmed to turn on in 30 second intervals 5x a day aimed at the side of the chamber?

Anyone have comments or suggestions? Thanks so much for all the help everyone on this site!  Its gotten me this far. funny thing is I have more fun growing then partaking which I would not have thought

You shouldn't have any fans running in a room with a SGFC, that will only dry out your cakes, which seems to be the case from my untrained eye looking at those cakes. And fanning is over rated. The SGFC has holes all over the thing, with air always moving through it, there's no reason to fan.

Oh, and trim the foil your cakes are sitting on, just a little.

You might benefit from bottom watering since you are up in the sky. 10k ft?? where u at?
comebackkid has a easy tek for it.

pic 2 does look dry. i see water drops on the cake but the cake itself looks parched.

make sure the chamber isnt buried or tucked in a corner. in the open is best. up on jar lids or something.

Congrats to your first successful grow.
The vermiculite looks strange. Try to get vermiculite that looks similar to other grows you see around here. Some time ago I already have seen someone with vermiculite that looked like yours. It kinda looks like oatmeal. It seems like your FAE is good enough. The fruits don't have significant signs of a lack in FAE. Don't fan too much and try to read your substrate surface. If it looks too dry mist it slightly.

Thanks for the input! Yes the chamber is in the middle of the room on 4 mason jars. I will try that watering tek maybe it will help me out. So it states to change out the water every day... is it wise to be lifting the cake out of the jar everyday till flush? My thought is that the cake will suck up all the water if I put just enough in the lid every day maybe.

I will also scrap the fan idea. Thanks HamHead!

You know I thought that the second I first poured it out to make my substrate. The brand I bought was Mica-Grow Verm.

http://www.hydrogalaxy.com/nutrients-supplements/vermiculite-20-qt/?gclid=Cj0KEQiA7qLDBRD9xJ7PscDCu5IBEiQAqo3BxCDEbrsnkR1lscvF9Ta7bWdosmkYT13922rimGihJn0aAmZA8P8HAQ

So I will try either of these. people on previous posts seem to like it.

https://www.amazon.com/Hoffman-16004-Ammendments-Horticultural-Vermiculite/dp/B003ZEACHO/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1483320978&sr=8-6&keywords=vermiculite

Or miracle grow brand. Problem is it is dead of winter so I am stuck on amazon prices. Any other brands you know of on amazon that is the type of verm I need?
