Some kind of edible?
    #23972873 - 01/01/17 12:10 PM (7 years, 29 days ago)

Picked a bunch of these yesterday, and someone I know swore up and down tht these were chantrelles and that they had eaten them before, but I have my serious doubts. What are these? Are they at least edible?

They were found growing directly out of soil under oak trees in the central coast of California. They don't seem to be producing spores. My attempt at spore printing them failed.

Cantharellus californicus, cook and then eat them.

Thanks for the quick response. What gives away that these are chantrelles? They certainly don't have the yellow color seen in every picture I can find online. Are they just too young/small to see significant forking in their gills?

Californian oak habitat, has those ribbed gills instead of the actual gills as in other genera, the stocky stature and dense flesh,
