Coir or hpoo
    #23972785 - 01/01/17 11:37 AM (7 years, 29 days ago)

So I have a few quarts of rye spawn that are ready to go.

I normally grow using hpoo as the sub because it's more "natural" and because I've read that proper pasteurization yields a substrate rich in beneficial bacteria that "crowd out" or fight contams.

Problem is, I'm feeling lazy, using my hpoo guy requires a 45 minute drive each way,I'd have to pasteurize, etc...

All the while I have some bricks of coir,  gypsum, verm and a bucket all here.

I've read that coir/verm is also contam resistant and was wondering-is it worth my time to go and process the hpoo...  That is to say-is there any benefit that properly pasteurized hpoo has over bucket ten coir?

Coir has no thermophile bacteria in it anyway so pasteurizing coir is stupid. Just use the bucket TEK or sterilize it.

Even if coir cost 10$ a brick I would be using it over manure 100% of the time

But do the thermophilic bacteria provide benefits that coir does not?

The only thing they do is prevent mold from germinating. Mold can't germ on coir.
