55 gallon drum sterilzer build instructions 3

For a complete list of parts check out my kit on kit.com. Please purchase items using the links so i get a commission on the sale for my creation, at no added cost to you.
https://kit.com/MyersMushrooms/drum-sterilizer
for a video on how to build this, see here
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwnbXnZDzBWVKE6Xot9jNUCCuY7CMk-RR
So this is actually my 85 gal drum im building. I get my drums from bubbasbarrels.com. Used they are about $200+150 shipping my 55 and 85 are both new and were $500 and $900 each. The hot pod element cover, and weldless bulkhead for the drain i get from brewhardware.com. The float valve is a ss 1/2" float from ebay from a vendor named aquamedia. The fittings, valve and garden hose thread adapters you can get from amazon or a local hardware store. I use 1500w elements for a 55 and 2000w for a 85. I highly recomend using a Stainless Steel element to reduce any chance of rust. The pictures above i don't have the 1/2 drain valve on the drain port yet. I drain the tank after each run as the water gets all dirty and you don't want electrolysis on the element.
To supply water you will need to regulate it down below 20 psi. I recommend a RV regulator, an adjustable one can be purchase for about $40 from amazon. To supply the water to the valve use either a red hot water garden hose or a braided stainless steel washer supply hose. The red hoses i can only find in 25 or 50 foot lengths and the washer hoses 5-6 ft. If you don't regulate your pressure down its a lot easier for the float to stick and flood your tank.
So first thing i do is use blue machinists dye for my markings. Then i take a set of calipers and use the tail end to measure the bottom lip to bottom then i scribe that line onto the side of the drum. This shows me where the bottom of the inside of the drum is. I mark my holes so the heating element nut sits against the bottom, locking the nut in place. The drain i position so the street elbow is just 1/8" off the bottom so it drains fully. Each of the holes is about 6" apart, so the float wont hit the element and so the drain valve won't hit the hose when in the off position. With the float valve i mount it about 1" above the element. I also remove the arm, heat it red hot wjth my torch then bend it straight and re bend it closer to the hinge point. This lets me mount the float lower and have a lower false bottom. Once its complete i will have to adjust the bend on the arm to get the water level about 1/2" above the element
To drill all the holes i use a small drill bit then a larger drill bit, then use a carbide bur on a 1/4 electric die grinder to get the right size. You can also use a conduit punch in the correct diameter but they can be pricy for a good set, well worth it if you dont already have a good grinder or drill set.

The false bottom and legs will be made out of this scrap stainless steel, its actually the back of an old commercial prep fridge. Ill just use my angle grinder with a cutoff wheel then clean it up with a flap wheel. The legs will be two strips of steel bent to a C shape, just like in my 55 gal single drum steamer. With the bottom filled with water and the float valve working you want at least 1/2" clearance above the float valve to the false bottom.

Video of my 55 gal drum.

I would imagine a plumbers merchant or large store that has plumbing spares. The valve is for either a toilet cistern or a hot water heater.

Are you running hot water into your drum as it evaporates off or is it such a low flow that it doesn't fluctuate the temps. inside by running cold water?
Also, since your run is on a timer is your heating element constantly on or is it hooked into a controller somewhere? Why only 2000 watt element instead of a larger one?

1500 and 2000w is all you need, and it allows you to run it off a 110v circuit. By using a lower Watt element it takes longer to heat up but not as much energy is wasted during the hold without any fancy controls to fail on you. The timer is a simple timer switch, i use cold water to feed. Hot water would cool by time it got to the valve, the run is so long and it just uses a trickle.

Update to OP as well as comment here. Use a SS heating element. I just checked my drum and there is slight oxidization under the element.

Hi grower do you think if I put a valve just before the ball valve and close it slightly I can save the purchase of a rv regulator valve?

I would think so as long as you are running off of your house connection. Your house should already be regulated down anywhere from 25 to 50 psi. If you are coming off of a line that doesn't have a regulator than one should be used. Just keep in mind of what OP said in his video about water spraying directly onto the float. I don't have any sterilizer build experience but I am a union pipefitter and deal with pipes and valves all day unfortunately.

Mine failed, but it might be possible with a gate valve. I have to regulate mine to 5psi, or no spray like in growers video.

I run mine down to 12 psi or so. Lower the better so the valve seals easier. A orifice restriction like a valve barely on wont regulate the pressure, just the flow volume, wont help with the valve sealing.

At what altitude would you want to start running slight pressure in the drum to make sure you get up to temp? I found this info somewhere but I cant seem to find it again.
Im getting ready to build two of these and want to make sure Im not missing anything.

Im no where near as high in altitude as you. Good to know to just run the system longer.
Between shroomery and your YT page, its a gold mine of information!
Im starting out with food grade platic drums before I invest into stainless drums. When you had your plastic drum how far off the bottom did you keep your heating element? Did you have any issues with the element warping or degrading the plastic in the vicinity of it?

No issues, i made it as low as i could go. The side wall shape limits how low you can go. You will need to buy taps for all the threads you need, or try making a diy tap with a npt steel pipe or soemthing.

Hello,
Would a standard steel drum work for this as well? Standard steel drums are cheap to find here, with or without inside coating, yet I'm doubtful any coating will hold after multiple steam cycles. Does rust become an issue quickly or can it be prevented by cleaning and drying?
My idea is to have the heating element and float valve in a separate smaller stainless container, connected to the 200liter barrel which will still have a small fake bottom to spread the steam. This way the steel drum can be easily replaced by a new one, preferably a stainless steel one of any size the heating element can handle. Or a second of third drum can be added to the separate steamer with valves to they can be run in cycles.
This is my first post here, I haven't yet found a place to properly introduce myself. I'm completely new to cultivating mushrooms but I've been reading here and elsewhere for a while now. I hope to start growing my own gourmet and medicinal mushrooms this year in the Netherlands.

Yes, but it will rust. I would recommend putting a tarp or canvas as a liner in so the bags don't get rust all over em. (see video below)
Yes you can make a boiler and feed the steam in,and yes one advantage of that is expandability.
Welcome to the shroomery! and congrats on not making a super noobish post! Check out my youtube if you haven't already!

Minor upgrade. The 85 gal drum i used a bottom plate that was a bit thinner and didnt have a brace like on my 55. I ended up making the bottom support a complete ring with notches for the fittings then a pvc leg in the center. The pvc will probably be a stainless pipe in future models.

Thank you grower for the work you have put in to providing us with the information to be able to scale our own little projects to larger projects! This will save a ton of time when processing substrate.

Hey grower have thought of putting a 2000w element and 1500w on another end of your drum. Turning on the 2000w to heat up drum quicker. Then switching the power to 1500w while its maintains 200+ degrees

Yes i have, best way would be run a 2000w and a 1000w together for warm up, 3000w total. Then have the 2000w on a separate timer to turn off around 5-7 hours in. Once the temp is reached the 1000w is all you need since your just holding the temp for 8-12 hours for sterilization.

I saw this and thought great I have everything on hand I would need to make one of these. Then come to find out the elements I have from an on demand hot water system are 220v and 4500w. A bit oversized I think.
Or does anyone know how I can incorporate one or both of these elements.

Heya!
What about the holes in the lid? I checked the YT channel already but I didn't got how it works with the plastic bucket lid. It is possible to be more detailed on that part because it seems a very important step how not to build a BOMB! Sorry about questions and questions.

I'm with Hugofly concerning the lid/holes. As far as I understand the lid part, you drill one large hole in the middle of the locking lid, then a smaller one close by. Does the zip tie go through both of those holes in order to hold the plastic bucket lid tight to the locking lid? I'm currently in the process of building one of these sterilizers, but I haven't gotten to the lid yet -- I'm still trying to get a good seal on the float valve given the curved wall of the barrel...

The 2nd hole is just big enough for the zip tie to go through but not the head, one gets pulled through from the inside the drum through the pail lid, through the SS lid then a 2nd zip tie gets attached on top and cut so its just the head. A radiator zip tie or even just bolt with locknut would be a better application but i just use zip ties.

This design works without pressure, the zip tie works just as a pull-knot to keep the plastic lid in place. You need some safety precaution in case a bag lifts against the hole in the steel lid, if this happens it will build pressure and might explode. Plus you need a hole to get the air out at the start so it can be filled by steam. I'm not sure why that plastic lid can't be pressed against the lid, maybe it has some sort of profile beneath it, but you need something that can let air/stream out even when bags are pressed against the lid. A double walled lid of some sort with the inside pierced in many places would be perfect. If you want to run it at pressure you need a pressure release valve, but you get the same issue, you don't want anything blocking it. And be sure you know exactly what you're doing before trying to work with pressure. A design like this might have some pressure as well depending on how well it produces steam and can let it out.

Thanks.
Yes, I don't understand how a plastic lid can solve the "problem" since is plastic and a bag can be squeezed against that lid blocking the holes.. well.. plastic or metal.

Heya,
Sorry to bother again.
Since I cannot find any SS drums here in my country.
You think that something like this would work?

It's all SS and it's to store honey.
Thank you!

Cool will do. I have a local source for the drum but the rest I was going to source online so I might as well support a buddy.

Yea you can use steel drum, it will just rust and get rust outside your bags. You can line the inside with old grain sacks or a tarp to keep the rust off. Rust is not a big deal if you are birthing the blocks like shiitake, but fruit off the bag like oysters yes.

They make a industrial food grade epoxy coating for barrels. Used it on my honey extractor. Don't know if heat would be a problem ,wouldn't think so. Easy clean ,no rust.

Got a name of that stuff? I have a few pieces of equipment that could use it.
