I'm sure there won't be a mad scramble to slaughter as many elephants as possible until the point they pull the trigger.
Exactly. If China really cared about the elephants they would put the ban on ivory immediately, not wait a whole fucking year.

Things aren't that simple to implement. Shop owners need to do something with their trinkets, suppliers need to transition to a new niche and the politicians all need to get new sets of false teeth while they still can legally. There will be elephant carnage, but it gives those with resources to protect elephants a visible deadline to commit financial resources to and even a loophole to sell confiscated ivory to Chinese markets to raise funds in doing so.

It actually is easy. The government has ultimate power of a country. They can do whatever they want. They could nullify all existing agreements involving ivory for companies and shops. Maybe give them a little bit of money to help them transition to a new trade. I wouldn't feel bad potentially screwing over the ivory traders because they knew exactly what they were doing and were taking advantage of an animal declining in numbers.
I'm sure if you asked those who protect the elephants if they prefer to have China end the ivory trade immediately or in one year and they would respond with "immediately."
The remaining confiscated ivory could be used in medical research or just disposed of.

i read some time last year that there was a start up company that was trying to flood the chinese market with fake rhino horns made with 3d printers
http://www.snopes.com/3d-printed-rhino-horn-developed/
stuff like this probably helps a lot.

Endangered where? The documentary filmmaker, Louis Theroux, or one of the hunters talked about how some areas have an abundance. I think Through talked about the local people getting killed for 'poaching' Not that you know what or why they are poaching, since they get shot and left
Also, of something is emdangered, killing it off probably won't effect the ecosystem much at all, because there are so few to effect in the first place.

They are endangered and populations are actively decreasing, not increasing.

Their numbers will never be what they once were of course, but because of long gestation periods and poaching, they risk outright extinction with such small populations.
It's not just elephants either, Rhinos are even more critically endangered and valued for ivory, and some sub species have been presumed extinct within the last decade.
That some populations are reviving in a few specific areas is a good thing, but not indicative of the species going on a complete recovery.

don't wait two years to have a damn baby.
Those numbers are actually way higher then I thought. On Rogan they said some places are doing very well, and people politicize it by using the statistics of the whole continent. The high fence operations helped, and it's food to have legitimate hunting operations.
There are like, 3000 Bengal tigers, for perapective

Great comparison of a solo alpha predator that occupies huge amounts of land vs a herbivore pack animal.
The are endangered for comparison

I dont see 600,000 as endangered. in fact the african bush elephant is only classified as vulnerable, it's not like black rhino and shit where there's only a few thousand left in the wild and they're on the critically endangered list, much like the java rhino that no one even knows about or the india rhino that shared the same fate of being unknown and it's apparently so unknown that there's only about 3500 of them in the wild but they also only hit the 'vulnerable' list
who the fuck comes up with the number juggling that 3500 and 600000 are both in the same conservation category, probably the same people that were trying to convince us that the black rhino was extinct when it was only a group of black rhinos in west africa that had died off
