monotub questions...
    #23970001 - 12/31/16 06:14 AM (7 years, 30 days ago)

First and foremost... Thank you! You guys rock on here!

Alright so I am noticing a difference in the size that the mushrooms are maturing sense I jumped from using trays to tubs. They appear to be maturing to early.

I did not use a liner in these first few.. my others have liners but are still colonizing so I wont be able to tell till they ready. Do liners really do anything cause I am getting a lot of side pinning? Is this maybe the cause for early maturity?

I am misting (lightly) and fanning the tubs just as an extra precaution... about 3 times a day. Should I stop that and just let them do there thing? maybe this is causing early maturity.

The caps that are opening I went ahead and picked there was like 8 or 9 in one of the tubs... should I harvest as they appear to be ready sense this is MS on these tubs?

Again thanks guys.. i think these are the only questions i was pondering the last few hrs. And a lot of what i read just seems so mixed.

Liners help because they stick to the substrate while it shrinks. Without a liner the substrate shrinks and a great micro climate is established between the tub and the substrate. Those conditions trigger the pinning on the sides.

It's easier to give a feedback when you post a picture of your tub. Even with MS grows I like to harvest all at once.

Pics let me see if I can explain this without it getting too confusing.

First Pic - Avg Harvest from a tray

I was even picking some the size of my hand (and I am a tall guy so I got big ass hands) example -

Okay now that was using hpooh, then i switched to CVG (I just throw it in an oven bag and PC for 30 mins and let cool just to be on the safe side so far no contams) when I switched to CVG I noticed the flushes got smaller and so did the fruits but not that bad.. example from a tray with CVG -

Okay now to the monotubs that are just starting to fruit...

This first one will show the uneven pinset (really was not getting it this bad with the trays even from MS) and a very early maturing mushroom in the top left.

Now this is that mushroom picked and sitting on a fan overnight

(NOTE the only reason i picked him and some others out of other tubs was cause i read somewhere that once they go into "spore producing mode" that sends a signal to the rest that the jobs done don't produce... ugh that's why i research then ask again cause there is so much information out there from who knows who... anyways not sure how true that statement was)

now in another tub you can see how early this guy was maturing-

Another thing I just thought of was the trays where all first gen G2G these first few tubs are 2nd Gen G2G if that makes a difference (i was under the impression I wouldn't see noticeable difference till after the 3rd)

Thanks!

TY for adding pictures.

If the size of the fruits varies a lot in one flush, I pick the biggest fruits first. But even with MS grows it rarely happens to me.
Try to use a liner next time. It is possible that the bottom of your substrate is full of mushrooms. Can you take a look under the tub?.

I don't know if it is just the picture but the substrate looks like it is drying out where the bottom holes are. How did you prepare your substrate? Maybe you made it a little too dry.

its 4 quarts water, 1 brick coco coir, and 2 quarts verm and 4 quarts spawn... I have been looking under and no mushies that I can tell... and the other ones I did have liners (just regular kitchen bags seem to fit perfect) I started to mist a little heavier this last day.

Okay when it comes to misting... I shouldn't have pools of water on the sub right? i just want to keep it moist with little drops?

If the tubs don't look dry (meaning they have condensation on walls, except for around the holes), you don't need to mist them.  For FAE, you can just place a fan near them, facing at the opposite direction of tubs.

Monotubs should be low-maintenance, just set and forget till harvest (if done correctly).

Liners do work wonder, they completely prevent side pinning and make cleaning really easy when the tub is done.

And yes, hpoo is better than CVG in terms of bigger fruits.

How much does the big fruit in the pic (the one you're holding) weight?

I think he was around 37 grams fresh. I had a few come out like that... but they where 2nd flush.. I am not sure why but it seems like first flush mushroom sizes always seem to be smaller then 2nd and 3rd.

Yeah the substrate is drying out around the bottom holes. I think its cause its winter and I have a wood burner for heat so temps range from 65 to 90 its really hard to control wood heat. But it is mainly around 78 but the indoor humidity is 19%.

I just started 2 h pooh tubs to see if they do better then CVG and I guess i will weight out the pros and cons later. even if the harvests are a little smaller CVG will be easier to prepare. We will see... the trays have been doing around 1 to 2 oz dried after each flush... I was hoping to triple that with tubs cause the size difference... idk... its all a learning experience. I did tubs with liners tubs without tubs with casing and now just did 2 with pooh... I will see what direction this takes me I guess...

because the sub is drying out around the holes... what are my best options...

I am thinking adding more micropore tape, or maybe increasing outside humidity?

thanks guys!

how much is drying out? i almost like to see a bit start to dry near the holes.
just give it a mist. if you can balance max FAE with keeping the sub moist you are golden.(also the spare time)

also in the winter my shit always gets dryer much quicker. requires extra attention.

Stuffing bottom holes really tight with polyfill works for me.

Also, I don't know if it's easy to find for you over there, but I use sheep shit instead of horse and it's really easy to prepare, and give good results.

Second flushes tend to give bigger fruits I guess, just harvested a 60g fruit from a second flush of a monotub, dried out to become 8g.

You've already got good enough answers but I'll add mine anyway.

In a monotub you've a lot more space for different genetics to grow.
In my experience, I would call it unusual for them to not mature at different rates when using MS.

You don't have to worry about harvesting them all just because some mature.
IME a percentage mature and I carefully slice them off (or twist/pull if they're not well attached, sometimes) and set them aside to dry while the rest finish.

The rest will soon follow.

At the end maybe 5% give or take are still finishing up.
At this point I do often just take them off so I can get onto dunking for the next flush.

EDIT: If you're having a hard time with polyfill search these forums for micropore tape.
There was a person that had an avatar of scarface I believe who's name I cannot remember. I don't want to steal the credit hence mentioning them.
Basically just get 2" wide micropore tape and layer it over the holes instead of stuffing with poly.
One layer on the top holes, 2 layers on the bottom.
I've found that during the less humid months I've had to toss on a third layer on the bottom holes.
I can get polyfill perfect but it's still (to me) so much nicer because the mushrooms don't grow into it.
