Open air is fine if dealing with pasteurized substrate. Anything sterilized will most likely contaminate. I don't wear gloves, ever.

I ran out of gloves a long time ago and never bothered getting more. It hasn't affected my contam rate. I always use my SAB when opening sterile media like petries or LCs. When it comes to inoculating through SHIPs. I just do it in open air. I haven't dropped a wedge in a grain jar or done a g2g in over 2 years but if I did I would use a SAB.

If you use silicone injection ports you could inoculate open air.

Anyway I inoculate in front of my FH. Usually it is running for other projects if I want to inoculate LC jars or doing g2g.
Agar work and g2g is very risky in open air.

Jars, and injecting, is so easy that you can do it inside a 80 liter clear bin bag. Spray the insides with bleach before you work and leave it wet.

I have central air and my ducts ard full of dust from ongoing renovations. Even spawning to bulk in open air is risky in this place.
