Gasoline price-gouging!

Man, this is pissing me off! The price of gas here in Vegas has gone up more then 30 cents in less than a month! They say the national average for regular is at $1.70 right now. Yesterday as I drove around I couldn't find anything cheaper then $2.06 here!! And premium is going for as much as $2.35!! That is fucking ridiculous!
Our govenor is asking for an investigation into price-gouging by the oil companies here. There is absolutely no reason for us to be paying these prices. There has been no supply problems here, no shortages, no reasons given at all to explain this. Someone is just getting rich at our expense.
Is anyone else in the country paying these prices or have we topped the list? I know California is usually as high/higher then us but right now I'm not sure. I can't believe I can't find gas for less then $2.06! I wouldn't have believed it just a couple weeks ago.

My economics professor (been professor for like 30 years, wrote the textbook, etc) was predicting that gas would be almost up to $4 on the West Coast sometime during 2004. I think he said $3 for East Coast too. Can't remember what he said was the reason, I have a tendency to fall asleep during that class. =/

By living in the US you enjoy the cheapest gasoline prices on the planet.
BTW, gasoline currently costs $1.59/gal where I'm at.

There are 3.8 liters to a gallon therefore you are paying about $4 per gallon for regular. Assuming thats New Zealand dollars, if you factor in the exchange rate you are at about $2.72 US per gallon. I've heard there are places in the world paying over $5 US per gallon.
Its true the US has some of the lowest gas prices. But that doesn't mean I have to like it when the price jumps suddenly just so Exxon can afford to send their CEOs to the Bahamas this spring!

Try coming to Europe!!! Norwegian gas prices are nuts...
Of course it sucks when the price jumps, but if the US had better public transportation it wouldn't be such a big deal... god damn oil industry lobbying the govt!

Exactly. We have little to no public transportation outside of larger cities. Driving is the only option for a good majority of Americans.

Gas prices in the midwest states are usually cheaper than the coasts and large cities. Last week regular was around $1.56, and in a day or two the price jumped up to $1.67 (where it has stayed for at least 4 days). I'm lucky that I live and work in a small enough city where I can bicycle to work everyday, and only use my car on weekends to take out my lady.

Here in CA it's up to about 2.18 a gallon. I hear it's supposed to go up to $5 by the end of summer. And hell yes, I'm whining.

The sad thing is that the governments keep us all strung out on gas because it's taxable. Without the taxes gas would be realitively cheap. I think it's something like 42% of the gas price is taxes, so 42 cents on every dollar. But what's ironic, the US government is willing to give tax breaks to people for buying hybrid/fuel efficent cars. Does it make any sense?

Makes sense, I read somewhere that the worldwide oil reserves are less than 50% of what they were.
