My credit card company is surprisingly kind? 1

Wow a cool thing happened today. Called my credit company to finally pay some of my card off and they asked if I had financial hardship recently (I was late on paying) so I told them I lost my job. They said that since I was a member for 2 years they are sending me $100 check in the mail, no strings attached in a gesture of good fortune.
My mind is pretty blown. I didnt even have to provide her with proof of termination she just offered it. Has anyone heard of this? She ensured me it was purely a gift from the company.
Thinks are lookin up a wee bit.

That's so nice of them!
It honestly would not surprise me if the company gave their employees a certain number of 'gifts' like this they could give out to people during the holidays. As evil as banking institutions sometimes seem..I work in the nonprofit sector and a lot of our large grants(100k+) are from financial institutions such as BOA, PNC, Beneficial...and even evil non financial companies such as Comcast and Aramark have higher ups working for them who are incredibly eager to give back who want to partner with my company to help make that a reality.
Altruism is good for us all. It's so important to embrace it and I think smart people, regardless of where they work or what they do, realize that.

Also, they know you're gonna go and tell ya friends/a bunch of us degenerates.
They know it's beneficial for them too. That doesn't make it evil or bad though.
If I give a fiver to a homeless dude it makes me feel good, I pat myself on the back, I won't lie - yes, it's out of sincerity, but I would not help people if it did not also make me feel good or at least, better. I maintain that altruism is inherently selfish and life is selfish in general...but being altruistic is by far the best kind of selfish to be, imo - on any scale.

i've been thoroughly pleased with Discover, so far, and have been a member for going on 3 years. the only thing i don't like is that if you make 2 payments within one period, the second payment has an undetermined delay period. one time there was two weeks between my payments, which put me in a tight spot when i was dealing with my legal issues

dude, you'll make it out of the rut just fine. I know it's hard at first, as someone who has dealt with sometimes severe depression and my fair share of ruts. It's really, really hard - but a rolling stone gathers no moss, stay in motion - it only gets easier and easier and you will surprise yourself when you look back at all you've accomplished.
And the fact that you went through all this shit and still end up there gives you a far more interesting and therefore valuable perspective than the version of you that hasn't gone through it.

Technically I suppose its them doing the best job they can. Credit is there for this reason, to lend when there is need. They are simply doing so as a gift and with faith that I will remain a cardholder.
That and yeah I suppose the social marketing ramifications of that are evident here lol

If you're in debt with a credit card with a bank you can usually negotiate a reduced settlement with them too as they are usually happy to recover a part of the money rather then having to chase it
Or balance transfer the debt to another credit card on a "no interest for 6 months" offer and just pay out the excess. Keep repeating that process till you've smashed out the debt

Keep in mind doing that will incur a 3% transfer fee usually and constantly opening new lines of credit hurts your score and looks bad but one or two transfers like that shouldn't hurt much.

I was asking because wells fargo is going through some shit regarding bankers signing people up for services they were not aware of such as credit accounts, they've paid out about 3 million so far to their customers as a settlement for fucking up credit and dicking them with high balance accounts that have huge fees when not maintaining the minimum balance. it looks like it will be a class action lawsuit

THe more I think of it, the more I find this business practice brilliant.
If you're struggling financially, you at risk of bankruptcy. If you go bankrut, the credit card company won't get paid and they will lose you as a customer for 7 years. Bad for business. But then, if they give you 100$, it can actually make a difference in your life and it's peanuts to them.
Fucking brilliant.

Good one. Yeah throwing out $100 here and there during the holidays for goodwill and client retention is going to kill a company that makes millions each month on late fees alone.
That's smart business sense. It is VERY smart. $100 is exactly jack shit to them, but to someone struggling to pay their bills, that could make or break them and make an extremely loyal client.
Operating at a loss? Yeah sure whatever you say. Companies like this have millions set aside for advertising and misc shit. This is probably like 10k or something taken out of some pool and some exec decided "hey lets toss out $100s to clients struggling to pay their bills during the holidays, on a case-by-case basis. This will build brand loyalty and is a gesture of good faith." And they were right. It will and I'm sure whatever petty pocket change they spent giving people a little kick-boost and small sense of hope, they will make that back multiplied, guaranteed. It's an investment, make no mistake about that.
Also: Pro Tip. Credit card companies' "whales" (the people who stack their pockets with cash), are NOT the people with a 800+ credit score who pay their bills in full every month. Aka your "lucrative clients" It's mostly the masses of people with shitty credit scores who pay late fees and interest constantly and constantly carry a balance on their account. People who buy beyond their means and can't pay their bill on time every month. They have a vested interest in keeping those types around... that's their bread and butter. Your "unlucrative" clients are where they make a large percentage of their money.

Clients that consistently pay the interest rate are what they want, clients who tip into bankruptcy are not. It would be brilliant for them to be off loading these customers once they start entering financial hardship, and not further increasing their costs to acquire or retaim a risky and high maintenance class of client. I meant operating at a loss in this situation, not collectively for the entire business. Just because they have money to spare does not mean it's a good policy to squander it

I think the whole point of the $100 was to prevent the "tip into bankruptcy"... Even if it only helps half of the people they give it to thats still serious client retention

I think you're overthinking it and forgetting the base concept of it, that $100 is absolutely nothing to them and it does create a tighter client bond. I sure as fuck like any company that gives me free money.
