Questions on sub level for V Tech and also homemade casing

I could not seem to find the answer to my question, nor an appropriate location for it either. In the infamous v tech, containers are loaded with one cup of substrate. I have the idea to load a pp5 quart with 3" sub (2cups) and place into a mono. Can anyone see this as not being advantageous to the typical 1 cup sub? I plan on working with a normal mono too but am wanting to try many things.
For a casing layer, I have all the ingredients to make any soil type mix. What would work best as a non nutritive moisture retaining layer? I know I can search this question but figured I'd ask the pros who work with raw materials.
Thanks everyone!

some people have been using verm as a casing check out mudafuka's sig and what is referred to as the bottle tek or muda bottles.
It's basically fully loaded pp5s (with various sub mixes/recipes) with a mono as the fruiting chamber where as the vtek is partially loaded pp5s with the pp5 or a 2 liter soda bottle top as the fruiting chamber.
bottle tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21168958 current (non-mudafuka) grow using bottle tek: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23960413
I really want to try this method I've done some quart pp5s vtek style... wish I had the space/ an appropriate place for a mono to hang out

What do you mean? It should work just fine, and more sub typically means more yield, as long as it has a good fruiting surface area.

Some people use coir, some use peat, some use vermiculite, some even use potting soil with success(I've done this one time in the past, messy but works). Some use a mixture of these things.

Thank you for that! I want to employ the bottle tek using grain and poo. What would be considered most beneficial ratio to maximize nutrition but not compromise on water retention. Obviously we can add water to increase efficiency for flushes, but it seems using only grain would not be the most effective.
